Intro: Let me tell you a little bit about my dad, he was a college football running back, beast in the gym, FBI agent for 25 years, and the most stoic man I have ever known. He had a sense of awe about him that commanded respect from everyone he met. Knowing this now, let me tell you a quick story. When I was in third grade I was singing at a school recital *explain the layout of the gym* I was seated in the top corner next to my friend at the time. My parents were always faithful to come to events like this to watch and support me, but for this recital they showed up a little late and were seated on the complete opposite corner of the gym. So while the other students were singing my friend and i started to act up. We would lick our hand and smack each other on the back of the head, and we thought it was hilarious. It was all fun and games until i felt a sense of dread about me. This is when I looked up and saw my dad, from across the gym, staring into me soul, straight faced, slowly shaking his head. So I immediately stopped licking my hand and hitting my friend because his blank stare told me to. I recognized the authority he had so I made the right decision to submit to it and act right.

Do you want to know how you are supposed to live as a Christian? The Sermon on the Mount teaches us.
Jesus here is making an ethical statement for his ministry saying that if you intend to truly follow him then there is a true standard of living.
However, many non Christians will try and limit Jesus’s teachings to just a moralistic way of living and that he never made claims that we should follow him as a Savior. But when we truly study the Sermon on the Mount we will see that Jesus is not just making ethical claims for right living, these ethical claims are based off of the primary point for this sermon.
For you to submit to his authority
The primary point of this sermon is for you to submit to his Kingly authority.
The concept of submitting to Jesus’s authority is a theme that runs all the way through the book of Matthew. The crowd recognized that Jesus must possess a different type of authority than their scribes because he is able to make claims like, Matt. 5:17 ““Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” showing that he is the one to whom the Law points and Matt. 5:22 “But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.” showing that he is the one who truly understands the Law and can give a proper interpretation and Matt. 7:23 “And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’” showing that he is the one who will be the final Judge on who enters the Kingdom of Heaven.
Jesus’s claims in this sermon show that the authority he is carrying is none other than the Messianic authority of God in the flesh. He has come to save us from our sins through his substitutionary death on the cross. And in his resurrection, as the King, he possesses Matt. 28:18 “And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”

The crowd recognized Jesus’s authority but the question is did they believe in Jesus authority? Today, it is my prayer that you have come to recognize that Jesus possesses all authority in heaven and on earth and that because of his supreme authority we must believe in his death and resurrection for salvation. But I pray that you not only recognize this truth but that you submit to it, that you believe it. So you have two options for a response today.
Reject Jesus’s authority and continue to live in rebellion knowing the end
Submit to Jesus’s authority by his grace alone through faith alone
