The Believers Warfare
Message 2
Strong in the Lord
Me:

Strong in the Lord

a. I love this passage
i. I’ve preached on it numerous times
Ephesians 6:10–17 NIV
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
We:

A Position of Strength

The battles of life

i. We all want to engage in the battles in life from a position of strength
Think about the future
Get a good paying job
We save for retirement
We want to be financially strong
When we make decisions
We want to be strong in our ability to figure out the right decision and make it
Influence over our children
We want to be strong in our abilities to guide and shape them.
We fight those battles from a position of strength
God:

Strong in the Lord v:10

What the Gospel teaches you is counter-intuitive

Because it teaches you not to be strong in yourself
But to do what?
To be strong in the Lord
Ephesians 6:10 NIV
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.
We need God to be our strength and power and security in every area of our lives
The Gospel is the opposite of being strong in yourself.

Look at Abraham

Do you know his story?
He is 90 his wife Sara is 75
God makes this promise
Genesis 15:5 NLT
5 Then the Lord took Abram outside and said to him, “Look up into the sky and count the stars if you can. That’s how many descendants you will have!”
Did you catch that they are 90 and 75?
Seems impossible
When he was weak physically (old) he had to be strong in the Lord
Abraham is known as the “Father of Faith”
Why? Because this is what faith is.
Standing where you are weak covered in the Strength of God
You:

Here’s Your problem

You won’t do it.

The only way you will is if you are convinced of your own weakness

This starts with our righteousness

This is thing that makes us acceptable to God
Because we are sinners, the only way we could ever be good enough to stand before God is for God to give us His righteousness as a gift.
It’s called the good news
It’s offered freely
Here’s the bad news
Most people will never receive it because they don’t really think they need it.
They are strong in their own sense of righteousness; they think they are good enough
Not perfect but good enough
It’s the same with your faith
As long as you think you can do on your own
But if you see yourself as being weak then you can live in the Strength and Power of God
When you are weak in your own righteousness then you can expect the Good News – The Gospel
Just Imagine

Applying this to every part of life

What’s the current crisis
Your marriage family children big decision finances job
Pray this
Lord I am weak in this area, and I cannot do it without your strength
Live your life in such a way that you are bound to fail unless God bails you out.
