 David the King

 Man after God's heart

 God's choice

… the Lord said, "Rise and anoint him; he is the one." (1 Samuel 16:12, NIV)

 God's servant

"What more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Sovereign Lord. For the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made it known to your servant. (2 Samuel 7:20-21, NIV)

 Man of intergrity

 Kept his promises

 cf. Saul as God's anointed

 cf. Mephibosheth

 Warrior King

 Personal courage

 Trust in God

David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. (1 Samuel 17:45, NIV)

David's fight with Goliath is typical and symbolic of the nature of his role as God's deliverer — steadfastly relying on God against apparently overwhelming odds

 Leader of men

David left Gath and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and his father's household heard about it, they went down to him there. All those who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered round him, and he became their leader. About four hundred men were with him. (1 Samuel 22:1-2, NIV)

David longed for water and said, "Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!" So the three mighty men broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out before the Lord. "Far be it from me, O Lord, to do this!" he said. "Is it not the blood of men who went at the risk of their lives?" And David would not drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty men. (2 Samuel 23:15-17, NIV)

 Shepherd King

… because he saw the Lord as his Shepherd

 Loved the Lord

I love you, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. (Psalm 18:1-2, NIV)

 Loved his people

When David saw the angel who was striking down the people, he said to the Lord, "I am the one who has sinned and done wrong. These are but sheep. What have they done? Let your hand fall upon me and my family." (2 Samuel 24:17, NIV)
