First Assembly of God
Pursue God, Build His church, Reach the world…all in love.
.
Core Values
Our church values prayer, Bible study, and worship. We value community outreach and missions; paired with discipleship to grow strong believers. We put a premium on servant-driven, humble ministries such as feeding people and caring for those in our community.
4. Worship
I dream of a church where people gather to usher in engaging worship; where personal worship is carried out…exuberant, ever-growing and intimate through the power of the Holy Spirit.
A. Plan to…worship
• Invite a special speaker to come and teach on worship
• Have an outdoor worship experience for our community
Come And Worship Him
Psalm 100:1-5
PSALM 100
A Song of Praise for the LORD’s Faithfulness to His People
A Psalm of Thanksgiving.
1 Make a joyful shout to the LORD, all you lands!
2 Serve the LORD with gladness;
Come before His presence with singing.
3 Know that the LORD, He is God;
It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves;
We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.
4 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,
And into His courts with praise.
Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.
5 For the LORD is good;
His mercy is everlasting,
And His truth endures to all generations.
Introduction
Psalm 100 follows several Psalms that are categorized as the Kingdom Psalms. It seems as though the organizers of the book of Psalms felt that after all the declarations about the kingdom that they needed to stop and express Worship to the King of the Kingdom.
This morning I want us to examine the short Psalm from two simple perspectives: 1) How We Are To Worship and 2) Our Motive In Worship
1) How We Are To Worship
a. Worship is offered Unreservedly – w/o reservation
i. Make a Joyful shout to the Lord all ye lands
ii. What causes reservation-hesitation
1. Lack of confidence in one’s self or lack of confidence in the object being praised
a. Illustrate
iii. Elijah’ challenge to Israel is still the challenge of many today – “And Elijah came to all the people, and said, k“How long will you falter between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, lfollow him.” But the people answered him not a word.
1. Why were the people silent – undecided, weren’t sure about God
iv. Joshua’s challenge to the people of Israel is still valid, “Choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15)
v. We are to “Shout” out our conviction
1. This breaks down the barriers of Indecision – you have to be sure of something before you tell the whole world you believe it
b. Worship is offered Joyfully
i. It is not a duty to be offered begrudgingly
ii. It is offered with joy – because there is great desire to do so.
iii. It is not a burdensome thing to do – Jesus said “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
c. Worship is done with gladness
i. It is looked forward to with expectancy
ii. We are coming before someone whom we love, esteem and worship
iii. Anything less than gladness would indicate something less than worship
iv. Therefore our whole being should be beaming and radiating with joyfulness and gladness when we worship
d. Worship is done with song
i. Music is the language of the soul
ii. It can often express what words alone cannot express
iii. This is why we have congregational singing and not just choirs or specials
iv. This command is to the entire congregation – the nation of Israel
v. They had temple musicians, but the whole church is to rise up and worship the lord in song
vi. If you are one of those who think it’s ok to miss the worship so long as I arrive in time for the message you’ve got it all backwords. Your are missing out. We come to church – “not to receive but to offer, to give our worship” in the giving there is great blessing for it is more blessed to give than to receive. But then as we are in the presence of the Holy One offering up our living song of praise He in turn pours out His blessing upon us. If you come only to receive you’ve missed it completely. But if you come to give you will never be disappointed
vii. This issue of singing our praise unto God is a large subject but I want to read just two or three scriptures for you
1. Exo 15:21 - And Miriam answered them: “Sing to the Lord, For He has triumphed gloriously! The horse and its rider He has thrown into the sea!”
2. 2Sam 22:50 - Therefore I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the Gentiles, And sing praises to Your name
3. 1Chron 16:23 - Sing to the Lord, all the earth; Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day.
4. Psalm 13:6 - will sing to the Lord, Because He has dealt bountifully with me.
5. Palm 33:3 – “Sing to Him a new song; Play skillfully with a shout of joy.”
6. Psalm 40:3 - He has put a new song in my mouth— Praise to our God; Many will see it and fear, And will trust in the Lord.
viii.Sometime people feel the spirit come upon them and feel inspired to sing in the spirit. The music was playing and there whelmed up within me an overpowering desire to sing to the Lord what was in my heart. This is believed to be the anointing of God but that he used the music at that moment to inspire my heart to be free to speak forth
e. Worship is done with Knowledge vs. 3
i. “Know that the Lord, He is God
ii. A proper knowledge/understanding of who God is
1. Through the Word of God
2. Through the revelation of the H.S.
3. Through the revelation of Jesus Christ
iii. A proper understanding of who we are and our relationship to Him
1. He is God
2. He created us
3. We are His people, His sheep
a. We were created for him, not the other way around
2) Our Motive In Worship
a. Thanksgiving
i. It is directed to him
ii. It is God focused, God centered not visa versa
iii. It’s purpose is to “bless” the heart of God – to bless means to make abundantly happy
iv. It identifies all that he is and has done and expresses gratitude
1. This produces a humble heart in the worshiper
2.
b. Praise
c. Why – Because the Lord He is Good
