What would life be like if you were limitless? If you never had to worry about finances or health? How would you live? It is often asked how you would live if you knew today was your last day. I pose a different question, how would you live if you knew you would never die? What would it be like to go back to those first few days of our faith? You remember that feeling? Remember how passionate you were? Remember how on fire you were? How you were no longer scared of the things this world tells you, you should fear? It’s time for the church to get back to this place. Not a place of anger and violence, rioting, or yelling. A place of living every day worshiping God in the face of a culture who says it is not worth it. Back to a place of not limiting ourselves. Today we will see how Paul reminded the church to go back to being limitless. Paul showed the church aspects of this life. First he taught about the Human things, Second he taught about Human Traps, and Lastly he taught about the Heavenly Treasure.
Human Things
Human Things
Galatians 4:8-9 “8 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods. 9 But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more?”
Paul gets into a conversation with the church and tells them that he is concerned that they are falling back into the things of the world. He does this as he tells them that the things of the world are not worth anything. Notice what Paul says, “you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods.”
Paul is telling the church to remember how meaningless things felt and how you were slaves to things that were not even worthy of being gods. You made these things gods. You spent your life making gods of things that don't even deserve the little g god title.
Exodus 20:3 “3 “You shall have no other gods before me.”
Exodus 32:1 “1 When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron and said to him, “Up, make us gods who shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.””
We have a tendency as Humans to build idols and we sometimes do not realize that the things in our lives are Idols.
Human Traps
Human Traps
9 But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more? 10 You observe days and months and seasons and years!
The human tendency is to go back to old habits. It is easier for our brains and hearts to go back to what is easy. It takes no effort and we can go to church on Sunday and Wednesday and be convinced that we are doing the good thing.
Heavenly Treasure
Heavenly Treasure
31 So, brothers, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman.
1 For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
