John 17:6–10 NKJV
6 “I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. 7 Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. 8 For I have given to them the words which You have given Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that You sent Me. 9 “I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. 10 And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them.
Greatest prayer ever recorded - the prayer of no less than the Lord Jesus Christ Himself
He started His earthly ministry with a proclamation from Luke 4:18. (The theme of CHRC)
He ends His earthly ministry with His prayer in John 17.
This prayer is also a prelude to the Lord’s heavenly ministry - He presently makes intercession for us.
If you are a child of God today...
You have been chosen.
You have been changed.
You have been consecrated.
You are not an accident!
The fact that you are here in this place this morning instead of somewhere (enjoying the beautiful Colorado fall) else is not a coincidence..
If you have put your faith in Jesus Christ today, it is not because you loved God first but because He has loved you first and has chosen you out of the world.
This is the part of Jesus’ prayer for His disciples. While the apostles played a specific role in the start of the Christian church, there are principles in the prayer of the Lord that applies to us, believers of our time..
John 6:44 NKJV
44 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.
election...
John 10:27–29 NKJV
27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand.
If you are a child of God today...
You have been chosen.
We cannot boast that we became God’s children because of our good works… actually we cannot even say “Oh I was saved because I chose to follow God, I chose to put my trust in Him, oh I prayed the sinner’s prayer.”
Jesus said in John 15 the Lord Jesus said we did not choose Him but the Lord chose us...”
To our main text today: In Jesus’ prayer for His disciples, the Lord prayed..
John 17:6 NKJV
6 “I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word.
“I have manifested Your Name” - Jesus revealed the Father.
Three R’s of Jesus’ earthly ministry.
Note.. “the men you have given Me out of the world..” again, the principle of being chosen by is not just for the 11 disciples..
Ephesians 1:4 ESV
4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love
Tell your neighbor “You have been chosen.”
What a thrill it is to be chosen from among many.. the bigger the crowd you have been chosen from the more special your selection is.. if our child comes home from school and reports “Dad, mom I have been chosen to be awarded the second place of honor in our class.” Wow congratulations, son! “ Then comes the million dollar question — son, how many are you in the class? Oh we’re a class of two students.. I don’t know if the parents will celebrate their son’s award or lament that he finished last.
The bigger the crowd...
the lottery..if only...
Your becoming a child of God is much greater than winning the lottery. It is not a coincidence.. it is the sovereign act of a loving God that rescued you from darkness into His marvelous light.
YOU ARE NOT AN ACCIDENT. look at the words of Jesus..
“They were Yours” - we belonged to God
“You gave them to Me” - The Lord Jesus looks at you as a gift from the Father”
Tell your neighbor: “You are a gift!”
Then the Lord said “and they have kept your word.”
Next truth is that..
If you are a child of God today...
2. You have been changed.
John 17:7–8 NKJV
7 Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. 8 For I have given to them the words which You have given Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that You sent Me.
You have been changed through the word of God that was given to you..
God has also given Jesus His words ==> the Lord Jesus then gave the very words of the Father to us..
What do we do with the words given to us..
We received them
Have come to know that Jesus came from the Father
Have believed that You sent Me.
There is a transformation that happened.. work of the Holy Spirit..
Not just intellectual ascent or understanding — it comes with believing.
Believing is not just in the mind.. the devil believe God.
It is faith — putting our trust in the Lord.
If you have put your trust in the Lord for your salvation. You can put your trust in Him for everything!
Illustration - child like faith
There is a transformation…full dependence--- happened to the disciples.
I like the words of Peter in John 6.
Lastly, if you are a child of God today...
3. You have been consecrated.
John 17:9–10 NKJV
9 “I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. 10 And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them.
The disciples were separated.. set apart from the world..
Doesn’t Jesus care for the world? .This won’t be consistent with His mission.
“to set at liberty those who are oppressed”.
“I came to seek and save the lost”
“call sinners to repentance”
John 3:17 ESV
17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Supreme High Priestly prayer of the moment.. He intercedes for His disciples and for all believers including us.
"In the same sense in which he prays for the disciples, he does not pray for the world." But the best explanation is that the high-priestly intercession at this supreme moment is concerned with those who were already given to him, and who have come to believe in his Divine Person and commission. “ - Martin Luther
You have a special place in the heart of Jesus and He makes intercession for you.
“All mine are Yours and Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them.”
Unity between the Father and Son when it comes to us..
What is said in private reveals the true intents of the heart.. prayer.. examples..
Question: If you are given a privilege to pray a prayer that will surely be granted, what would you pray for?
Jesus’ private prayer — not about the affairs of heaven,, not about shining thrones or royalties, not about seraphims and Cherubims that surround His throne, not His royal sceptre.. he was praying for these poor, lowly uneducated fishermen... is for His believers..
It is refreshing to know that with Jesus’ privilege to ask for anything from the Father. He chose to use that privilege to pray for you.
You are precious to Your Heavenly Father, You are precious to the Son.”
“And I am glorified in them.”
We have been consecrated to give glory to God.

If you are God’s child you can can rest and take great joy and comfort in this truth, that you are kept by God because of the finished work of Christ. You are not kept by your obedience; you are not kept by your own good works nor your own righteousness; but you are kept by God because of the righteousness of Christ. And it is because of this righteousness, it is because the Son honored the Father that you are assured that as the Son intercedes for you the Father answers.
It all goes back to the truth that You have been chosen, you have been changed and ultimately you are consecrated to give glory to God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 8:34 ESV
34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
