Pick up the story with me in Mark 2:5-12
Mark 2:5–12 ESV
5 And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” 6 Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, 7 “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8 And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts? 9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’? 10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— 11 “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” 12 And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”
As we look at this story we get to see another side to this Jesus
As this story continues to unfold and here in the early chapters we see mark developing this character of Jesus
We see him showing us a man with the most important authority of all
THE AUTHORITY TO FORGIVE SINS
We see Jesus
Knows mens hearts
Nothing is missed by him
He can call them out
Mark 2:6–8 ESV
6 Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, 7 “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8 And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts?
Jesus knows the heart of these men so he responds to it
this should cause them to sit up and take note and he uses this to prick at them
he asks them this question mark 2:9
this is a theological delima for them
which is easier that which only god can do or what god and satan can do
well what if I did both
A Man who can do what no one else but God can do
FORGIVE SINS
There is an affliction that plagued Pete more than his paralysis
It was his unrepentant sinful heart
The contempt he had for those who ignored him
The anger towards God for his condition
His dissatifaction with his life
HIS SIN
This is something that plagues everyone
Romans tells us Romans 3:23
Romans 3:23 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
We are all sinful and have not lived up to what we are called to be
something we must realize
Just like last week we are not clean needing someone to cleanse us
Mark is painting this picture that the only way we will be cleaned is through Jesus
Jesus has the power to for
