Psalm 73:2 KJV 1900
But as for me, my feet were almost gone; My steps had well nigh slipped.
Stay Close To God
INTRODUCTION:
It is a possibility for us to sever our connection with God by failing to obey and live as we should.
Some people ask God’s blessings upon their lives and at the same time they are living in open rebellion to His will.
God wants us to live true to Him.
Let us consider some who failed God:
PETER IS THE OUTSTANDING FIGURE IN THE NEW TESTAMENT.
1. Note how he lost “touch” with God.
a. At the last supper, he promises to lay his life down for Christ.
John 13:37 KJV 1900
Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.
b. A step downward when he “fell asleep.”
Matthew 26:40 KJV 1900
And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?
Next he “tried to kill a man”
John 18:10–11 KJV 1900
Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus. Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?
Then he followed “afar off” .
Luke 22:54 KJV 1900
Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest’s house. And Peter followed afar off.
And then he “denied” Christ .
Matt. 26:69-70
Matthew 26:70 KJV 1900
But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest.
And cursed
Matthew 26:74 KJV 1900
Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew.
His restoration
Matthew 26:75 KJV 1900
And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.
a. Peter encouraged and commissioned.
John 21:3-15
b. Peter fully restored.
Acts 1:15 KJV 1900
And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)
Acts 2:14 KJV 1900
But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:
John 21:15 KJV 1900
So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.
CONCLUSION:
See how he prays to be “restored” (Psa. 51).
