Micah 6:6–8 NASB95
6 With what shall I come to the Lord And bow myself before the God on high? Shall I come to Him with burnt offerings, With yearling calves? 7 Does the Lord take delight in thousands of rams, In ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I present my firstborn for my rebellious acts, The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? 8 He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God?
Micah here ask a great question.
one scholar says,
The people begin by asking what they should bring to the Lord to please him when they come to worship him. They correctly recognize that he is the “exalted God” (cf. Ps 46:10). Then they make some specific suggestions in reply to their opening question. Shall they bring burnt offerings? They think ritual alone is a solution when in reality it is part of the problem. No mere ceremony is ever sufficient. “False worshipers think God’s favor, like theirs, can be bought” or earned. They “offer the Lord everything but what he asks for: their loving and obedient hearts.
Worship is not an experience but a lifestyle.
It’s a condition of the heart.
Your action reflect your heart.
When I raise my hand it is the outward expression of my heart.
True worship starts in the heart.
Jesus says in Matthew 15:8-9
Matthew 15:8–9 NASB95
8 This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far away from Me. 9 But in vain do they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’ ”
Not everything that is called “worship” is actually worship
We shouldn’t confuse our works, for worship!
Genesis 4:3–5 NASB95
3 So it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the Lord of the fruit of the ground. 4 Abel, on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and for his offering; 5 but for Cain and for his offering He had no regard. So Cain became very angry and his countenance fell.
Cain offered God a sacrifice from the works of his hands.
Cain gave God works, while Abel worshipped.
I give glory to God by expressing my heart to him in Worship.
worship begins in the heart..
The bases of Cains relationship with God was performance.
When I am in the world my life in righteousness and justice and love and kindness expresses worship to him.
But when I come into the fellowship of the brethren I am to express my heart with those who believe.
Psalms 100:4 says
Psalm 100:4 NASB95
4 Enter His gates with thanksgiving And His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him, bless His name.
So when we enter his gates we come to him thanking him for what his has done.
We look over our day, our week, our month, our year, our life.
And we find things to thank him for
We consider all the things that he has done and we find a reason to thank him.
Hebrews 12:28 NASB95
28 Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe;
Service here the greek word latreuō meaning worship, minister or serve (in religious duties)
Notice the text, “Lets show gratitude..”
Ezekiel 44:17–18 NASB95
17 “It shall be that when they enter at the gates of the inner court, they shall be clothed with linen garments; and wool shall not be on them while they are ministering in the gates of the inner court and in the house. 18 “Linen turbans shall be on their heads and linen undergarments shall be on their loins; they shall not gird themselves with anything which makes them sweat.
While they are ministering, the word means to serve.
Take off what makes you sweet.
Take off shame, fear, pains, hurt...
bitterness, jealously.. sin
and...
Psalm 118:1 NASB95
1 Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
we thanks him because he is God, we thank him because he is good. We thank him. When we enter his gates.
Just because he is here,
Just because we are alive.
We can enter. We acknowledge...
And when we get in when we are there in his courts we give him praise or we sing song to his name.
Again, worship shouldn’t start when the music begins to play. Worship starts in the heart.
There are many reason to praise his name
Psalms 30:5 says his anger is for a moment but his favor is life or for a lifetime.
Psalm 30:5 NASB95
5 For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for a lifetime; Weeping may last for the night, But a shout of joy comes in the morning.
His favor, grace is for a lifetime
notice what would happen when the early church would gather together to worship
Acts 2:46–47 NASB95
46 Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.
Thank you God for favor just found another reason to worship you.
If worship begins in my heart why should i come to church.
well, for one God deserves and is worthy for corporate worship gatherings.
but also God pours out to us favor and grace.
Psalms 22:22 says this
Psalm 22:22 NASB95
22 I will tell of Your name to my brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You.
Psalm 35:18 NASB95
18 I will give You thanks in the great congregation; I will praise You among a mighty throng.
When I get around the people of God its time to praise him.
Its time to express my heart to him
Ephesians 5:19 says
Ephesians 5:19 NASB95
19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord;
Colossians 3:16 says
Colossians 3:16 NASB95
16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
to our text last week....
John 4:19–24 NASB95
19 The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. 20 “Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.” 21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 “You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 “But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24 “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
So when the woman asked Jesus.
Hey Jesus there is a mountain in Samaria and one in Jerusalem.
Which is right?
Which 1 do we worship at?
Jesus responds the time for worship is now.
And not about a place but a condition of the heart.
For God is a spirit.
And the only way to worship is in the spirit.
And God wants you to reflex outwardly what is going on inwardly.
