38. REDEMPTION AND RESTITUTION (Luke 19:1–10)C
hrist came to save all people. It is not His will that any perish. He desires that all come to repentance—2 Peter 3:9. He always had time to help all classes of people. The word “restitution” means: pay back, making good for wrong or injury, restore what has been taken away. Redemption makes us right with God—restitution makes us right with man!I. THE CHARACTER—vv. 1–41. The passing—v. 1. Christ passes through Jericho. Enters into this town to preach the gospel.2. The personality—v. 2. Zacchaeus was the chief (boss) among the Publicans (tax collectors). He was very rich. Some of the money he used for himself. Christ loves all people—even the crooked people who cheat. He does not love what they do—He loves their soul! Christians should hate sin—but love sinners!3. The person—v. 3. Zacchaeus was a short man. As Jesus passed through the town, he could not see Jesus!4. The persistence—v. 4. He ran and climbed a sycamore tree. He was anxious to see Jesus.II. THE COMMUNION—vv. 5–61. The command—v. 5. Christ was interested in Zacchaeus. Notice these words—“I must abide at thy house.” Does Christ live at your house?2. The conversion—v. 6. Zacchaeus came down from the tree and received Him joyfully, Zacchaeus was hungry and searching for truth. Christ met His need!III. THE COMPLAINING—v. 71. Self-righteousness. The people complained because Jesus went to the house of Zacchaeus to eat. Christ came to save sinners. Some Christians are too self-righteous to reach sinners for Christ!2. Sinners received—John 8:11. The woman caught in adultery was forgiven by Christ. He said, “Neither do I condemn thee, go and sin no more.” Do not be critical toward sinners—pray for them!3. Salvation received. Notice the words of Jesus in John 6:37. None are “too bad” for Christ to forgive.Christ loves and died to save the “bad people” in the world today!IV. THE CONVERSION—vv. 8–101. Restitution—v. 8. Zacchaeus meant business after he accepted Christ. He would give one-half of his possessions to the poor. If he took any money wrongly, he would pay it back fourfold. Zacchaeus was not only right with God, he wanted to be right with man!2. Reception—v. 9. Salvation came to Zacchaeus. Though a “bad man,” still Christ forgave him of his sins.3. Redemption—v. 10. The ministry of Christ was to “seek and save those which were lost.”It is not enough to be redeemed by Christ. We must be willing to make things right with man. God gave the Ten Commandments to man—the first four toward God, the last six to mankind. If you wrong anyone, or hurt anyone by evil talk and gossip, you should go to that person and make things right. Many prayers are not answered because man is not right with mankind.
