The Temptation & Triumph of Jesus in the Wilderness

Matthew 4:1–2 ESV
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.
Matthew 4:3–4 ESV
And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, “ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”
Matthew 4:5–7 ESV
Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “ ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’ ” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”
Matthew 4:8–10 ESV
Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’ ”
Matthew 4:11 ESV
Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.
Matthew chapter 3:13-17 & Matthew chapters 4:1-11 function as the preparation for the ministry of Jesus
Matthew chapter 4:1-11 prefigures and sets the stage for how the devil was to be defeated on an old rugged cross
Led Into the wilderness vv. 1-2

Led into the Wilderness
The Person:
The Place:
The Purpose:
The Period of time :
Matthew 4:1–2 ESV
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.
Who led Jesus into the wilderness?
Mark 1:10 ESV
And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.
Mark 1:12 ESV
The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness.
This word drove out in Greek is ekballo, and it means to violently be ejected, to
be expelled out, to be cast out or to be sent out.
Why is the Spirit doing this to Jesus?
to Present Jesus, by way of testing, as the New Israel- Servant-Son of God.
“He was Hungry”
2. The Three Temptations (4:3-10)
“and when the tempter came.”
Temptation can develop character or reveal character
a. Round 1: Temptation of the bread vv. 3-4
the devil is tempting Jesus to do is to change His understanding of Sonship.
Deuteronomy 8:2 ESV
And you shall remember the whole way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not.
Deuteronomy 8:3 ESV
And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
b. Round 2: Temptation at the temple vv. 5-7
Three things:
1. the devil is misapplying the Scripture; therefore, he was using it wrongly.
2. In using it wrongly the true meaning is obscured and even contradicted
3. Which stems from a wrong and twisted interpretation.
Psalm 91:1 ESV
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
Psalm 91:2 ESV
I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
Deuteronomy 6:16 ESV
“You shall not put the Lord your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah.
Here, again Jesus is tempted to test His Sonship to see if God would really protect Him.
c. Round 3: Temptation to commit idolatry
These temptations of Jesus are done from the least to the greatest desires
The devil is trying to change Jesus understanding of Sonship, by by-pass His sufferings and go straight to glory.
Deuteronomy 6:13 ESV
It is the Lord your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear.
Deuteronomy 6:14 ESV
You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are around you—
