BOOK STUDY: The Gospel for Real life
We will do this every Wednesday starting Nov 10
And when we get done with this book I have another book already picked out. (Gentle and Lowly)
Today is a special day because we will be taking communion
Our communion is open (meaning it is for all believers)
That also means it is ONLY open to believers
If you are a born again Christian we invite you to join us in Communion
If you are not born again we invite you to come to Jesus today and then take communion with us
Our sermon title is: The Gospel
And that’s really what communion is all about
The last meal Jesus took on this earth was very symbolic
He broke the bread and as He broke it He said this is my body which is broken for you
And as He passed the cup of wine He told them it was his blood of the new covenant
Communion tells the story of the Gospel (the good news)
The news that Christ came, died, and rose again to save man from his sins
One of the reasons we take communion is to remember what Jesus did for us
We physically eat and drink to impress upon our hearts our covenant in Christ.
We also use this time to renew our covenant with one another
I am going to read our covenant to the church
I want you think about your faithfulness to it
Are you still abiding in it?
Have you been faithful to it?
Make necessary changes in your life today
Romans 1:16-17
Romans 1:16–17 NASB95
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faith.”
“For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith”

The Gospel should not be something we hide but something we greatly desire to tell

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel”
Why would anyone be tempted to be ashamed of the gospel?
Because the message of the cross is foolishness to the world
Not just our world today but 2,000 years ago also
People just simply do not believe it!
1 Corinthians 1:18–19 NASB95
For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And the cleverness of the clever I will set aside.”
The reason many do not accept the gospel is because they think it is foolishness
Think about it
The message of the cross is to stop pursuing this world and all the great things we see with our eyes and start following an invisible God whom we cannot see
No longer seek to be rich
No longer seek to be famous
No longer seek to bring attention to ourselves
No longer seek to be successful (from the world’s point of view)
But make your life all about following God
Oh and by the way the instructions to follow this God are written down in a book called the Bible.
Oh so the Bible must be written by God!
No it was written by men who were inspired by God
Actually by over 40 authors
And over a period of about 1500 years ago
And it has been copied over and over and has been passed down generation after generation for the last 3500 years
And it goes against the grain of the culture and times we believe it is timeless
And its not enough to just believe it
You’ve got to submit to it and follow it
You’ve got to obey it and then share it
And by doin gall of this and through the work of the Holy Spirit we become more like this Jesus who was here 2,000 years ago and now sits at the right hand of the Father
When people hear that they say that’s FOOLISHNESS!
Look at the rest of the world!
They’re not doing that and they are living good lives!
That sounds lie an ancient myth
That sounds like a fairy tale!
I may do some bad things but who doesn’t!
And I’m much better than so and so
Application:
But to us we need to be proud of the Gospel of Jesus Christ
Paul was not ashamed, he considered himself most blessed to believe it
It did’t matter what the world thinks
It did’t matter if the world says it is foolish!
There is no greater blessing than to know Jesus and His message personally
We must not be ashamed or embarrassed to tell others about Jesus
People rejecting it shouldn’t matter to us
People scorning us shouldn’t make a difference
The Gospel should not be something we hide but something we greatly desire to tell

The Gospel is God’s Power For Salvation

Because in it is God’s power to save
And what this world needs most desperately is not a friend, or a pat on the back, but the words of life about a Savior who died for them
How much more should our salvation from a dying and lost world motivate us?
How much more should God saving us from hell motivate us?
How much more should the freedom we have in Christ motivate us to tell others
Being freed from the bondage we were once in!
(v 16) “for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek”
The reason Paul was not ashamed is because it was the only hope for this world!
The world cannot save themselves
The world outside of Christ is enslaved to sin!
The world is on a highway to hell
They have been blinded by the god of this age
And we have been given the task of telling them how to be saved

for “aWHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.”

14 How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him awhom they have not heard? And how will they hear without ba preacher?

15 How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “aHOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THOSE WHO 1bBRING GOOD NEWS OF GOOD THINGS!”

It is the responsibility of the whole church to take the gospel to a dying world
Because the gospel is God’s power to save them
They will be delivered no other way!
And we are the messengers commissioned with this task!
THE WORD SALVATION HAS TWO BROAD MEANINGS
The deliverance from the consequence of sin
What is the consequence of sin?
Rev 20:12 “And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
The Power of God for salvation is salvation from an eternal punishment
When someone believes in the gospel they are saved from hell!
All their sins are washed away
Past present and future sins are gone!
The violations against God are erased!
This is salvation!
1 Thessalonians 1:10 “and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, that is Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath to come”
God sent Jesus to save us from this second death!
Jesu came to save sinners
Jesus came so we could have eternal life with Him!
1 Corinthians 15:55–57 NASB95
“O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
The deliverance from sin
Not only will sin damn you, but it will make you its slave
Before we were saved we all were slaves to sin
Sin controlled us
We could not overpower it
It led us and told us what to do
It was our master
No matter how hard we tried we could not deliver ourselves from its power!
But Jesus came to set us free from that bondage!
John 8:34–36 NASB95
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. “The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever. “So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
When you get saved SIN NO LONGER RULES YOUR LIFE!
Christ gives you the power to say no to it!
You have the power in Christ Jesus to walk out of slavery!
Jesus in you gives you that power!
No son of the Most High is a slave anymore!
He sets us free and free indeed
(v 16) “to everyone who believes”
The word believes just means “to trust”
It’s not enough to agree with the message of the cross
There are many who agree with the message of Jesus but have never been saved
There are many who say they love Jesus but have never been truly saved
We must trust in the person of Jesus Christ
It is a transfer of trust from yourself to Jesus
It is us no longer making all the decisions to fulfill our desires
It is trusting in God to lead, guide, and direct you in all things
It is choosing God over everything in your life!
It is making a lifelong commitment to say no to sin and yes to God
To trust in God is to take yourself off the throne of your life and place Jesus there
The only requirement is to believe!
God does not save based on merit
God saved by basis of faith!
Who can be saved through this faith?
“to the Jew first and also to the Greek”
This is just another way of saying all people
You can never be too sinful that Jesu cannot save you
And you can never be too good that you don’t need to be saved
ALL MEN NEED TO BE SAVED
ALL PEOPLE NEED THE SAVIOR
THE ONLY HOPE FOR THIS WOLRD IS JESUS

Jesus died for them all
And we should never be ashamed of taking the gospel to any man or woman whom God puts in our path
1 John 2:2 “and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world”

The gospel reveals the righteousness of God

(v 17) For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faith”
Notice the present tense “is revealed”
The word revealed means to make fully known
Every time the gospel is shared and believed God’s righteousness is manifest to the world
Every time you win someone to the cross God’s righteousness is made known to a dying world
Every time I preach the gospel and someone gets saved God’s righteousness is brought to light by all those in attendance
What exactly is His righteousness?
Righteousness is a status given by God
A person who accepts the gospel becomes a son of God
He has been acquitted by the judge
He has been justified by the Almighty
He has went from a person with a sin stained soul to a person who’s fleece is white as snow
When God looks at a person who trusts in Jesus Christ he no longer sees the sinner but He sees a son
Being righteous is being placed inside the kingdom of God
It means adoption
It means eternity with the Lord
It means forever peace with God!
The gospel reveals the righteousness of God
It presents an opportunity for anyone to trust in Jesus and be made righteous
“But the righteous man shall live by faith”
This righteousness is only given through faith
No amount of good things will get us into heaven
No human being has ever been good enough and will ever be good enough
God’s righteousness comes only when we put our trust in Jesus
And this faith is not a one time thing: IT’S A LIFESTYLE
“shall live by faith”
It is turning from our sin and walking with God
It a complete change of direction in our life
Closing
When someone accepts the gospel they have made a decision to follow Jesus for the rest of their life
They have decided to repent of their sins and walk away from those things forever
They have decided to place their trust in the Savior and let Him lead their lives
They have decided that God’s way is better than our way
God may be speaking to you this morning
The righteousness of God may be calling for you today
Today is the day of salvation
God’s voice is gentle
It is meek and soft
It’s having the feeling of needing to go upfront
It’s feeling of a need to do something about that unshakeable tugging at your heart
THAT IS THE VOICE OF GOD CALLING YOU
And if you will step out by FAITH, and come place your complete trust in Him HE will save you today
The Righteousness of God will be revealed in this place
You will no longer have judgement awaiting you, but joy
You will no longer be a slave to sin, but you will have the power to say no to it
You will no longer be a stranger to the things of God but a partaker
YOUR LIFE WILL CHANGE TODAY IF YOU TRUST HIM!
We are going to have an invitation now
This invitation is for anyone who needs to make a spiritual decision…Do it now
It’s for anyone who has unconfessed sins in their life that need to be confessed…Do it now
It’s for anyone God is calling to come to Him.....Do it now
Lay down your burdens today and get right with God
~Prayer~
COMMUNION SERVICE
We spoke today of the gospel
The power of God for salvation
The hope of the world
The forgiveness of sins
If you have unconfessed sin in your life please confess them now
We are going to take a moment of silence to do so
If you don’t know Jesus, you can ask Him to save you right now
Please Bow your heads
Moment of silence
Paul said, “For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it
Pray a blessing over the bread
and He said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
Eat the bread
“In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood”
Pray and bless the cup
“do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
And as they went out they sang a hymn
