Families are important
Sociologist agree - building block and essential
It is the first community God created
In the family, life is brought not only to our doorstep, but into our kitchens, bedrooms, and dens. In the family, life is happening all around us, and it begs to be questioned, evaluated, interpreted, and discussed. There is no more consistent, pregnant, dynamic forum for instruction about life than the family, because that is exactly what God designed the family to be, a learning community. ~ Paul David Trip, Pastor
It is also under attack and has always been under attack
Divorce, absentee parents, redefining family
The number one influence on children is still the parents
It is a huge and daunting task, just because they are grown doesn’t mean you are done
God must be in the center of it all
Unless the Lord builds a house, its builders labor over it in vain; unless the Lord watches over a city, the watchman stays alert in vain.
I love as we have launched this Build series - we start with families
It is our desire and our conviction as Family church - if we can come along side, provide resources and help to build families
Through family we will change the world
That begins at home
The greatest tragedies we face today is that we believe our children are just going to discover who they are with no direction or guidance
No wonder there is so much confusion
If we do not raise our children - someone else will
So how do we parent on purpose?
No matter where you are -
In the middle of it - give you tools and encouragement today
Done with it - there are grand kids, they will still need help , there are those without parents
Or it is still down the road - put your self in a position now to be the parent you need to be
Turn Deut 6:1-9
“This is the command—the statutes and ordinances—the Lord your God has commanded me to teach you, so that you may follow them in the land you are about to enter and possess. Do this so that you may fear the Lord your God all the days of your life by keeping all his statutes and commands I am giving you, your son, and your grandson, and so that you may have a long life. Listen, Israel, and be careful to follow them, so that you may prosper and multiply greatly, because the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has promised you a land flowing with milk and honey. “Listen, Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart. Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Bind them as a sign on your hand and let them be a symbol on your forehead. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your city gates.
Let’s pray
How?
1. Love your God
“Listen, Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
You cannot pass on what you don’t have
A man ought to live so that everybody knows he is a Christian... and most of all, his family ought to know. Dwight L. Moody
Your faith is the key to passing on your faith
you have to live it.
You are the greatest influence on your children
2. Transfer dependence form the parent to God
When they are little everything depends on you - teach them as we trust and depend on God, so can they
Things we must teach: all form Proverbs
1. Fear God
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
2. Select friends carefully
The wounds of a friend are trustworthy, but the kisses of an enemy are excessive.
3. Watch their words
A gentle answer turns away anger, but a harsh word stirs up wrath.
4. Develop a work ethic
Go to the ant, you slacker! Observe its ways and become wise. Without leader, administrator, or ruler, it prepares its provisions in summer; it gathers its food during harvest. How long will you stay in bed, you slacker? When will you get up from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the arms to rest, and your poverty will come like a robber, your need, like a bandit.
5. Be careful what they expose themselves to
Guard your heart above all else, for it is the source of life.
6. Manage God’s money
Honor the Lord with your possessions and with the first produce of your entire harvest;
7. Be generous
A generous person will be enriched, and the one who gives a drink of water will receive water.
If we are faithful in pouring these things into our children, it will change everything
This is still God’s plan
3. Look for any opportunity to teach your child about God
Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Bind them as a sign on your hand and let them be a symbol on your forehead. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your city gates.
Every moment is a teaching moment
A family is a place where principles are hammered and honed on the anvil of everyday living.
- Chuck Swindoll
