Introduction

Explanation

2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation—

We should long for the “pure spiritual milk” so that they will grow, resulting in their salvation.
What is the pure spiritual milk?
The Greek doesn’t actually say, “the word.” So, is this talking about the Scriptures.

13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. 14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.

I believe that this is talking about the things of God.
What are spiritual things? The Spiritual disciplines.
Prayer
Scripture
Fasting
Giving
Serving
Evangelism
Coming to church
What else?
How do we stir up a hunger for God?
When I give that list, some of you start thinking, “Wow, look at all of those things that I have to do.”
Men, when you began to pursue your wife, the flowers that you got, the reservations that you made, and the dinner that you bought… did you do that as a checklist, or did you do that because you were pursuing someone?
When we see that God wants a relationship with us, we go through extraordinary lengths to love and care for him.
John Piper // What Do I Do When I Don’t Desire God?
So often, we either read the Bible or pray.
Reading without prayer is like placing logs in your fireplace and never lighting a spark.
Prayer without reading is like striking the match with no wood in the fireplace.
Create a Rule of Life (Darryl Dash)
If you are the sum of your habits, do three things every day that strengthen your relationship with God.
Head to Heart - Pray about what I read.
If you need to grow in some way, create a rule of life so that God might work in you.
If your rule of life was, by 2025, I want to be a more prayerful person, what rule of life would you add to your life?
By 2025, I want to be more peaceful and less angry. How do I do it?
What doesn’t work?

3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.

Peter is teaching inductively. I think that is why I like him so much, and why we find him easier to read.
Paul would have said, If you have tasted that God is good, you would know that God is good and not do these things.
Peter tells a little more of a story.
Don’t do these things, but desire more of God, that is, if you have tasted and seen that God is good.
We understand Peter a little better when we see that he writes inductively.
The ultimate achievement of our lives is Jesus.

Application

Darryl Dash // I have never met a person why has a relationship with God - who actively reads their Bible, consistently prays, and worships with a body of believers who has not grown.
If that is not your rule of life, make it your rule of life.
If it is your rule of life, congratulations, because your rule of life is now your life.
After these three things:
Practice a Sabbath
Give Generously
Serve Others
Share the Gospel
Look after Your Body
Develop a Rule of Life
