Why? It gives us hope, courage, and confidence
What do I want them to do? Remember the power of God
Why It gives us hope, courage, and confidence
Review
Omniscience
Omnipresent
Omnipotent
Interesting we are doing this on Halloween
satan’s “high non-holy day”
ME
I need and rely on power
I am profoundly made aware of this truth when I have lots of power?? an endless supply
No
When do I come face to face with my need for power?
When I lose power
When I am driving my car and all of sudden I have no power to move, it has stop having the power to move and I do have the power to get me where I am going.
This lack of power becomes the number one priority in our lives, all other plans go by the wayside, because you have no power.
We experience when we lose power at our house…especially when the power lose is in the colder months or hot months
Our lives become supremely aware of our need for power.
We need power
It is not just our cars, houses, our bodies need power and energy to move and for our hearts to beat.
WE need power
TENSION
We do not just need power for our cars, house, and bodies....when need our God to be powerful.....though we are not always aware of it we need him to be powerful to move, live, breath....and we are made more aware of it, supremely aware of it when we going through hard seasons and trials. We say God can you do this, heal them, make this happen?
The question before us: WHAT CAN HE DO? HOW POWERFUL IS OUR GOD OF THE BIBLE.... WHAT POWER DOES HE POSSESS
THE QUESTION IS SO BIG AND FOUNDATION TO US THAT WE ANSWER IT WILL AND BELIEVE IT WILL DETERMINE
- Your courage, confidence, hope and faith rests on your view on how BIG and POWERFUL GOD IS.
YOUR ANSWER DOES NOT NEED TO BE TRUE TO ACT TRUE
How big and powerful your God is will impact your courage, faith, confidence, and hope.
If we believe God is BIG....we will have great hope, courage, confidence, peace, and hope.
If we believe God is small…we will have little hope, courage, confidence, peace, hope....our lives will be filled with anxiety and fear …and we will do whatever we want
It is as Tozer says
A.W. TOZER
What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.....For this reason the gravest question before the Church is always God Himself, and the most important fact about any man is not what he at a given time may say or do, but what he in his deep heart believes God to be like. We tend by a secret law of the soul to move toward our mental image of God. This is true not only of the individual Christian, but of the company of Christians that composes the Church. Always the most revealing thing about the Church is her idea of God.
We always gravitate to our idea of God.
The question before us is
HOW BIG IS OUR GOD?
This question that has been asked for centuries by Abraham, Isaac, Mose, Israel, and today
What we read in scripture is God is omnipotent.
What’s the omnipotence of God? : God’s unlimited authority to bring into existence or cause to happen whatsoever he wills that is within his nature.
God is all powerful, He can do whatever He wills and no one can stop Him.
Within His nature
God cannot lie, cheat, steal
GOD ALMIGHTY IS said 57 times in scriptures.
What encouragement this brings! OurGod is all powerful, there is nothing He cannot do!
God is not just the omnipresent God: that God that is always with you
God is not just the omniscience God: He knows all about you.
He is much more
If we just make God to be these two things: omnipresent and omniscience what we will have a created is a God is who is a teddy bear who knows all about us.
But when we combine omnipotence to to the other two have have this huge, incomprehensible God, who knows us, who’s with us, and loves us.
WE DO NOT SEE A TEDDY BEAR BUT THE LION OF JUDAH WHO IS ALL POWERFUL, ALL PRESENT, ALL KNOWING, AND ALL LOVING.
THERE IS NOTHING HE CANNOT DO OR NOBODY WHO CANNOT STOP WHAT HE WILLS
THIS IS NOT SOMETHING GREW INTO, LIKE WE GROW STRONGER AND MORE POWERFUL IT SOMETHING HE HAS HAD SINCE THE BEGINNING OF TIME.
WE SEE GOD OMNIPOTENCE IN THE FIRST TWO VERES OF THE BIBLE.
What verses back this up
WHAT DOES THE FIRST TWO VERSES OF THE BIBLE SAY?
Genesis 1:1–2 ESV
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
GEN 1:1-2 IS SAYING
In the beginning God created the whole world and universe
- Before God created the earth EARTH it was formless void, no stars. There was nothingness. GOD WAS AN IS.... we cannot even imagine it. We cannot even wrap our minds around how did God get here and all we know is He is uncreated and we cannot wrap our minds around that.
- IN 6 successive days God creates the SUN, MOON, STARS, ANIMALS WATER, EARTH and the list goes on.
BY THE POWER OF GOD ALMIGHTY GOD CREATES THE WHOLE WORLD AND UNIVERSE OUT OF NOTHING
Look what Ps 33:6-9 says reflecting on this
Psalm 33:6–9 ESV
By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host. He gathers the waters of the sea as a heap; he puts the deeps in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him! For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.
DAVID IS SAYING BY THE WORD OF THE LORD GOD CAUSE ALL THAT WAS TO BE TO BE
THERE’S POWER IN THE WORD!
IN 6 DAYS GOD CREATES IT ALL!
Do you realize who big of job God did in 6 days!?!!?
let’s just look at our own galaxy and they say there are 100 billion to 1 trillion galaxies with billions and billions of stars
Our one galaxy let’s look at it and lets look at the biggest THING in our galaxy, which is the sun....tthe sun is so big it is so big that you can fit he sun is so big that about 1.3 million earths earths fit inside of it.
It’s 93 million miles away, the perfect distance for us to have life on earth, (too close we burn up to far we freeze up) so far away that it takes light 8:30 to reach us traveling at the slow speed of 186,000 mps
But it is not the BIGGEST STAR....there are several stars that are much bigger.
8,000,000 suns can fit into Betelgeuse
This is how big our God is
Look at the earth that is so small in comparison even in our own galaxy THE EARTH IS SO SMALL AND GOD IS SO BIG THAT IF THE EARTH WAS A GOLF BALL YOU CAN PLACE IN BROWNS STADIUM AND WHEN YOU DO YOU WILL HAVE THE SCALE OF WHAT THE SIZE OF THE EARTH IS COMPARED TO OUR GALAXY
This bigness of who God gives Jeremiah great confidence and courage about God.
Jeremiah 32:17 ESV
‘Ah, Lord God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.
JEREMIAH looks to the heavens, sees how big everything is REALIZES HE IS SO SMALL BUT HIS GOD IS SO BIG! AND SINCE HIS GOD IS SO BIG JEREMIAH CONCLUDES THERE IS NOTHING TOO HARD FOR YOU GOD.
If you can create all the heavens and the earth there is nothing is too hard for you that is within you nature.
Maybe you have had this experience when you have been in nature....WOW GOD IS BIG!!!
Even in our metro parks I get this sense of the bigness of God, especially climbing the stairs at Rocky River Reservation and look out.
It is good to get outside
it is not just JEREMIAH that is blow away it is David, David is blow away by the bigness of God and yet He still loves us know us.....that we are smaller than an atom on this golfball in side Browns stadium and God loves us.
Psalm 8:1–4 ESV
O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger. When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?
David says I look at all that God has created, the SON, MOON, STARS, we are small than a grain of sand in comparison to God.
AND YET GOD YOU ARE MINDFUL OF ME, YOU CARE FOR ME.
IN THE CONVERSATION KIDS HAVE ABOUT THERE DAD, MY DAD CAN DO ___, WE AS BELIEVES CAN SAY MY DAD MADE THE SUN, MOOD, STARS, HEAVENS, MY HEART, YOUR HEART,
MY DAD IS THE GREATEST OF ALL CREATORS
Psalm 139:13–16 ESV
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.
HE LOVES ME AND CARES FOR ME
AND HE DOESN’T JUST CREATE AND CARE FOR ME AND LEAVE ME
He is not a God who stands by when others try to hurt his children.
HE IS NOT A deistic God, which is the number one belief people have about God.
God is powerful active God in our lives....we see this all over scripture…we see powerful act against the powers of darkness that become manifest through people or principalities
God does not sit back and say ok
We see this in Daniel in the Lions den (king Darius throws Him in and God shuts the lions mouth), healings, GIDEON goes to battle against Midians and the odds are stack not in there favor it’s like 4:1 135,000 to 32,000 God said that’s too many, then they move to 10,000 about 13:1 God said to many, go to 300 men. 450:1
With God 1 is a majority..
One of the places we are going to see this ACTIVE POWER of GOD TAKE PLACE IS IN EXDOS
We are going to see as God’s power comes to live it brings and will bring courage, confidence, faith,
We see this take place in the Exodus story. When the nation of Israel is facing a great power of EVIL…that is abusing them and harshing them, enslaving....GREAT INJUSTICE....GOD DOESN’T SAY, WELL FIGURE IT OUT....God said enough is enough....Pharaoh let my people go!
God wants to show them how great He is…that He is the God of the I have and I will be..
But I am going to give Pharaoh a chance
RaiseS up leaders in Moses and Aaron to go to Pharaoh to tell him to let my people GO
Pharaoh says “ok God”
Nope “Pharaoh says who do you think you are
Exodus 5:1–2 ESV
Afterward Moses and Aaron went and said to Pharaoh, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.’ ” But Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, and moreover, I will not let Israel go.”
WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE, and your God is I am Pharaoh....
is this not what the powers of this world say to us…who do you think you are, who do you think you God is
God didn’t want to get to this point…I want my people delivered
Pharoah has another thing coming
Exodus 6:1–8 ESV
But the Lord said to Moses, “Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh; for with a strong hand he will send them out, and with a strong hand he will drive them out of his land.” God spoke to Moses and said to him, “I am the Lord. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name the Lord I did not make myself known to them. I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, the land in which they lived as sojourners. Moreover, I have heard the groaning of the people of Israel whom the Egyptians hold as slaves, and I have remembered my covenant. Say therefore to the people of Israel, ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment. I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. I will bring you into the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. I will give it to you for a possession. I am the Lord.’ ”
arm
You want to know who I am I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, God almigthy
I have a covenant with my people, my children and you are getting in the way of the covenant.
What I love about the “I will be” statments is that in Hebrew it is also past tense meaning when that God is saying I have and will redeem you, it’s a done deal, I have and will bring you out, I have and will be your God.
WHEN GOD SAYS SOMETHING IT HAS BEEN DONE AND IT IWLL BE DONE
God is saying the similar thing to us…
I HAVE AND I WILL
It’s Romans 8:29-30
Romans 8:28–30 ESV
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.
I have redeemed you and will redeem you
I have redeemed you from the greater Egypt sin and greater Pharaoh Satan
I have redeemed by the blood of Jesus dying on the cross for your sin
It’s the already
I am have delivered you and I will deliver you
I have delivered you from the greatest problem in your life and am continued to deliver from the problems you face now
I have healed you and will heal you and will heal you fully
I have provided for you and I will provide for you
I have
My prayer of us is that we believe this and do not be like the nation of Israel after God says I have and I will
Exodus 6:9 ESV
Moses spoke thus to the people of Israel, but they did not listen to Moses, because of their broken spirit and harsh slavery.
This is your omnipotent God, He does not only create you and the world, He is the omnipotant God of the I will be and have done.
Before we take communion let’s listen to S.M. Lockridge talk about this omnipotent God, who is king in part of sermon he gave in 1976
1 Corinthians 15:54–58 ESV
When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
