Introduction: October 31st is often celebrated as Reformation Day, because it was on this day that Martin Luther nailed his 95 thesis…
The Five rally cries that emerged during the years of the early reformation.
1.Sola Scriptura- Scripture Alone : Not on man’s wisdom
2.Sola Fide- Faith Alone : Nothing we earn
3.Sola Gratia- Grace Alone : Nothing we accomplish
4.Solus Christos- Christ Alone : No other mediator
5.Soli Dio Gloria- Glory of God Alone : Not for our praise
Transition: Today we are going to focus attention on this fourth rally cry.. That Christ alone is the only mediator between God and man. I Timothy 2:1-7
Read and walk through the text.
The context of Scripture helps explain what “all people” means...
Immediate.. in verse 7, reference to the gentiles.
General context ....
Genesis 12:1–3 ESV
Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Romans 3:21–24 ESV
But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
The point is not that God saves everyone, rather He desires that everyone without distinction be saved. The point is to show us that God does not show ethnic favoritism. His purpose of redemption came about through a particular people group in order that all of God’s people in every people group might be saved. This is what we discover in the vision of Heaven that the apostle John records in Revelation 5:9-10
Revelation 5:9–10 ESV
And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.”
Now, back to 1 Timothy.
Verse 5 starts to reveal this salvation is possible.
Because God is one
Because there is one mediator between God and man, Christ Jesus
The reason Christ is the only mediator is revealed in verse 6.
Illustration of a bridge..
Point: God has provided only one way for sinners to be reconciled to Himself. Christ alone!
Implications of this truth...
Preparation. Those who belong to Christ have confidence of our eternal home. John 14:1-6
Proclamation. Those who belong to Christ have confidence of our testimony. Acts 4:11-12
Closing: Praying for those whom God gives us the opportunity to share Christ as the only mediator between man and God.
