Act 2: Fall
Act 2: Fall
Who loves fall? Pumpkin Spice?
Act 1: Creation
God is Creator Man Made in his Image Everything was Good Man made for perfect fellowship
Act 2: Fall
Man Fell into Sin
This is why everything seems sowrong & broken
Life is Broken and We are Broken
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”
This is at the center of all of our temptation - Did God really mean what he said or is it up for debate? Could God have gotten it wrong?
2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ”
What does she add here? She is already on her way to distrusting God and Trusting her own vs 4-5
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
Serpent made its way into the Garden: Tempted Eve & Adam to doubt the goodness of God - It had never occured to them to rewrite the Script, Tempted to think God was holding out on them. He was withholding the knowledge of good and evil. At least their ability to know expereintially and decide what was good or evil on their own. At this point they were able to fully trust God’s understanding of good and evil. instead they now were deciding without God’s definition and authority.
Translation - God is keeping something from you
What reasons might God have or keeping that knowledge from us?
6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
This is why everything seems so wrong - Life is Broken and We are Broken
Man and the Earth now Lived under a Curse -
This is why life is so difficult &frustrating
Gen 3:
17 And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
Everything that we do now. The world is fighting back against us. We were made in God’s image to rule over this world and now the world is rebelling against us just like we rebel against God.
This curse is also the reality of breaking God’s law
10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.”
10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it.
Adam was a representative of all the people who would come after him
this was the penalty for all mankind. You might think that unfair - But Adam was a good representative
When was the last time you knew something was wrong but did it anyway?
He did what we would have all done given the same opportunity.
This is why life is also why guilt & shame play such a big part in our world
Before the fall
25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
Man’s Relationship from God was Severed
This is why relationships are so painful & messy
We see it right away after the fall
8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”
This is why relationship with God is so hard
2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Have you felt distant with God? Have you wished God felt closer?
6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
Vertical & Horizontal
This is why relationships are so hard - The reason that we struggle with relationships with others is because we struggle with our relationship with God
Man was Banished from God’s Presence
This is why life sometimes feels hopeless, lonely and pointless
23 therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. 24 He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.
Because Adam was a representative of all the people who would come after him, this was the penalty for all mankind. He did what we would have all done given the same opportunity.
This is why life sometimes feels hopeless lonely and painful
We lost the ability to be in God’s presence forever in a perfect world.
Outside of God’s presence is to be outside of joy, purpose, security, hope and love.

Why does it Matter?
Why is the world so…
Imperfect, painful, full of suffering, jacked up, harsh, unloving, hard to live in.
What most frustrates you? How does it connect to the fall?
The Fall tells us that sin is an evil intruder into this world. Humanity brought sin into the world, and it is all our fault
Why do we struggle with depression, suicide, gender confusion, Death, Hatred, war, anger hangnails, broken nails.
Because of the fall. Humankind does not want to do things God’s way. There are great consequences to not doing things God’s way. Things that were meant for good now can be used as weapons for evil.
When things are hard, We realize the fall is involved. Our sin, our brokenness, our inability. Disease and death and cancer and pain are all a result of the fall.
This is Act 2… WE await Act 3 & 4 What will God do. How will He get things back to the way they should be? Can he? How?
