Will God Still love me… Week 1
Main Idea of Message: Jesus offers forgiveness when we miss the mark or overstep boundaries.
HEY
Tonight, I had planned a few months ago to do a movie series and have clips to tie into the message, but a few weeks ago sitting in my office God took me to a moment or a series that we need right now.
Will God still love me if…
Over these next few weeks, we will be looking at our mess ups, mental health, and emotions.
What are some questions you have of Jesus?
Last November we did a similar series and had each of you write, text, or email in questions that I answered on stage. But here are questions we have seen recently from students:
· How do I know if I am saved?
· Can I lose my salvation?
· If I have messed up does God still love me? Can I still have salvation?
· What does Jesus do with my anxiety and depression?
· What does Jesus think about all these emotions I have?
YOU
Tonight, we are going to work through this question, “Will Jesus still love me if I messed up? How does he handle my sin and addictions?”
I am not sure what each of you came here with tonight but let me say that tonight is a transparent night that we need to have in our lives. I believe that some in this room tonight are about to have a big night.
Right now, I want every person in this room to think of the sin or addiction you have in your life right now. What is the biggest sin you are battling right now?
Many different times in our life our sins keep us from thinking God wants us or can even use us. But your sin no longer has to or should reign or rule over your life.
For some reason many teenagers and adults believe that their sin, decisions, or addictions have caused them to step outside or away from God, I want you to know that your sin and mess up does not keep you from salvation. Secondly if you are a believer your sin does not cause you to lose salvation or step outside of being used by God.
But ALL OF OUR SIN IS IN NEED OF REPENTANCE
Tonight we are going to look at a passage about a woman who meets Jesus at a moment in her life where she was caught in a mess up and sin.
LOOK
John 8:2-11
2 Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. 3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst 4 they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 5 Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” 6 This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. 7 And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. 9 But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. 10 Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”
Verse 1-11 “The Scene”
Jesus was a the temple and people came to hear him talk.
a. Jesus sat and taught them
b. Pharisees and scribes brought a woman caught in Adultery to Jesus
a. They were trying to trick Jesus
b. Embarrassing the woman for the sake of testing Jesus
c. The leaders wanted to test Jesus and make a point
d. The OT and law from Moses was brought before Jesus by these “leaders”
a. Jesus came and fulfilled and conquered the LAW
Verse 6
The Pharisee’s and Scribes
· They were testing Jesus and trying to set Jesus up so they can bring a charge against Him.
Verse 7-8
· Here is the famous passage of Jesus writing in the sand and dirt
· The Pharisees and scribes kept pushing and trying to get Jesus to answer or respond.
o They were enticing and bullying Jesus to give an answer
· Jesus Responds:
o “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw the stone or a stone at her.”
§ Jesus gives a gut punching response
§ The people leave
Verse 9
The people have left and now it is only Jesus and the woman left standing there.
Verse 10
Jesus stood up from drawing or playing in the dirt and said to the woman
(Jesus playing the dirt again joke of disciples)
· “Where did everyone go?”
· “Has no one Condemned you?”
o Big note: Jesus was still there because He did not or never would sin.
o BIGGER NOTE: Jesus could have judged or condemned her BUT Jesus came to save sinners.
· DEUT 22- THE STONE
· NUMBERS 5 and Numbers 5:13,16
Verse 11
“Go and Sin no more.”
· Jesus didn’t come to condemn you, but to save you.
The woman in our test had been in a lifestyle of sin. According to the “law” (Deut 22) her punishment was death by being stoned to death. Jesus didn’t look at this woman’s sin or her specific sin, Jesus asked which of them was without sin.
· Why is it important that Jesus said that?
o Jesus didn’t choose one sin as worse than another
o All sins are equal (NO LEVELS OF SINS IN GOD’S KINGDOM)
o We are all sinner working through our own process of sanctification
o We all have a sin problem or addiction
· When Jesus talked to this woman:
o He did not talk down to her but spoke to her eye to eye.
o Jesus saw her value and her worth
o Jesus restored her and helped her find value for herself.
§ How many of us need to be restored and find our value
o Jesus called her out of her sin to a different life.
Romans 3:23 – Bullseye game (have AMY set this up)
I believe that looking at this passage we need to see our sin for what is and what it does to us
How does Jesus deal with our sin?
Jesus deals with our sin by:
Point #1- Forgiving our transgressions (Ps. 32:1,5)
I been reading through 2 Cor. 4:7 and I love this passage.
· Earthly Vessels- Frail and Brittle Containers
· Why did God choose frail containers?
o Beauty of vessel doesn’t distract us from what is in the container
o Our cracks let Jesus’ power to shine through our failures or mess ups
§ Our failures allow for God’s perfection to be seen.
Jesus deals with our sin by:
Point #2- Covering our sin (Rom. 4:7)
When we sin:
a. We feel shame
b. We feel like others are judging or condemning us
c. We feel remorse and guilt
d. Regret is normally accompanying our sin
No matter if sin is personal, private, public, or sexual, We feel these emotions.
Jesus deals with our sin by:
Point #3- Washes away our sin (1 John 1:9)
I love the scandal of Grace. Those words we sang a few minutes ago and will be singing again here in a few minutes. What Jesus did on the cross for us is a scandal.
Hear me:NO SIN IS UNFORGIVEABLE EXCEPT THE REJECTION OF JESUS (BLASPHEMING THE H.S.)
OUR MISTAKE, MESS UP, AND SIN CAN BE FORGIVEN AND REPAIRED.
Our sin makes us feel:
· Dirty
· Used
· Damaged
· No one can relate to it
· Unfit for Jesus
· Broken
But Jesus through His Grace we have:
· New life
· Made whole, healthy, complete, lacking nothing
· Able to grow
· Restored
· Protected and secured
· Worthy
· Enough
· hopeful
Jesus deals with our sin by:
Point #4- Calls us to repent (Not go back to it)
What does our sin do to us:
· Separates us from God
· Harmful to us
· Harmful to others
· Unaddressed leads to more sin
DO
What sin is haunting you tonight. I know that we just had Halloween, but I feel like that there are some people in this room tonight who have some skeletons in their closet that we need to address in this place tonight.
Response: Altar is open. People are here to counsel. But what is mess up do you need to give to Jesus and what steps do you need to take in your life right now.
