I’m Going Fishing
Its a few days later
the men have gone back to Galilee where most of them live
Peter decides to go fishing
Peter Thomas John James Nathanael 2 others, Andrew and Phillip
Peter and Thomas
Peter the one who denied Jesus and needs to be recommissioned at the end of this chapter
Thomas a stubborn unbeliever of the risen Lord who finally confessed My Lord and my God
The Church is filled with former stubborn unbelievers and deniers, and every thing in between
Jesus is again going to meet them
He is going reproduce a miracle that He did for them at the beginning
turn to Luke 5 is where we see this miracle
turn back to John 21 where we will see the the miracle at the end
Pray
Caught Nothing
the fishing is done at night with lights to attract the fish
all night there is throwing out the net and dragging it back
throwing it out again and again
with nothing to show for it
very discouraging work
try and try but nothing to show for your hard work
one more cast, this is it, this is the one, but no
All night long
the same scenario as at the first time when they met Jesus
Jesus at that time that they would be fishers of men
But Jesus
the long unproductive night is almost over
lets go home and get some sleep,
but lets stop at Denny’s and get some breakfast
they are heading to the shore
it was possibly still a little dark
a early morning mist
but they don’t know who it is
They were not looking for Jesus
they were not seeking His help
But Jesus came to them
have you been successful?
where is your fish?
are you satisfied with your hard work?
the question was to make the realize their effort
caused them to realize their hunger
have you caught anything to eat?
caused them to realize their failure
Then gives the command
something they have been doing all night long
its getting towards morning and the time for fishing is over
but to humor you who ever you are
they cast the net on the right side of the boat
turn to Acts 16 6-10
Paul tried and tried to go where he thought best
but an unknown man called from Macedonia, come
Jesus will guide your work
Jesus has many good works for us to do
Jesus will wait until we have fished all night in our own power
coming to this church was totally of God
When they did what the Lord told them to do they caught
153 Fish
John recognized Jesus
probably because of the repeat of the miracle
the only thing that changed is the fish that were caught
so Peter Jumps and swims to shore leaving the others to do the work
the net was so full it was dragged
and there is breakfast, and the Savior
Jesus supplied for their needs
Jesus supplied the fish in the net
Jesus made sure the net does not tear, to lose any of the fish
the fish were counted and there was 153
Fishers Of Men
here at the end of the ministry of Jesus to His men
he reminds them of their new mission
he reminds them of the original mission
in their first catch Jesus says follow me and I will make you fishers of men
the fishing you will be doing is evangelism
bringing men and women into the kingdom
Telling the people the good news, the gospel
in the first account the nets broke and some got away
in the second account the nets did not break
the one which got away, is always done in our own power
when we are under the guidance of Jesus we are blessed with an abundance
and with breakfast
the disciples in the boat that morning
could have said it aint hapenin, not going to throw the net one more time
especially this stranger on the shore
but they immediately obeyed
thus they were blessed
the disciples needed this night of fishing
and they needed the Lords guidance in their lives
they needed to learn another lesson from Jesus
without me you can do nothing
we also need that lesson, sometimes daily
how many times have we wasted our time “working for Jesus”
thinking we are doing something great
and in the end all we are is tired and hungry
when Jesus all the time wanted us to cast our net on the right hand side of the boat
turn to Haggai 2
