Buying Our Way In
When we examine the entirety of the Bible it is indisputable to see the work of the Holy Spirit.
Surveying the modern church we note a division in the church. One side we call secessionists the other we write off as super charismatic.
Still there are those who are in between who have no idea what the big deal is.
It would be irresponsible to speak about the church being empowered and not address the work of the Holy Spirit
When I look to the book of Acts who was confused about the Holy Spirit
Acts 8:18-22 “Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money, saying, “Give me this power also, so that anyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” ...
Today there are many who walk around without a clue as to who the Holy Spirit is… what the Holy Spirit does… much less, how the Holy Spirit functions in their life
The Holy Spirit is the fulfillment of the Divine Promise in our Lives.
The Holy Spirit is the fulfillment of the Divine Promise in our Lives.
And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me;
for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Without the HS there is no ministry… without the HS there is no Power or Authority
There is a baptism the must occur of the Holy Spirit
There is a difference between the
indwelling of the Holy Spirit
infilling of the Holy Spirit
None of this should be confused to make us believe the HS is absent at any time… The Holy Spirit is in the World already at work.
*The Holy Spirit is the Fulfillment of the Divine Promise in our Lives
Prophetic Promise of the Holy Spirit
Prophetic Promise of the Holy Spirit
There is a temptation to to believe that when Jesus left we were left to our own devices
Scripture promises that God will never leave nor Forsake us
The promise of the Holy Spirit is a promise to us...
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,
even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
The promise for those who love Jesus is the arrival of the Holy Spirit
Is 44:3 ... I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.”
Matt 3:11 ““...He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”
The promise is more than Him being present around us… He will live dwell with us
In case there was any doubt… His presence, His power, His authority, all that is encompassed in the divine will be with us FOREVER
The Holy Spirit is Sent
The Holy Spirit is Sent
On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.
Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”
And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”
We read there are those who could not receive the Holy Spirit…
The disciples have an encounter with Jesus
They believed in the resurrected Christ and Jesus breathes on them to be able to receive the HS
They do no receive the Holy Spirit until 10 days after His Departure
Holy Spirit Dwells in Us
Holy Spirit Dwells in Us
Something that occurs upon the ascension is humanity is able to receive the HS to live inside of them
In Acts 1:8 the disciples are promised the Holy Spirit, Later in Acts 2 we see how the disciples are filled with the Holy Spirit
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”
By this time the Apostles already had the Spirit indwelled in them
Those that heard and believed did not automatically receive the HS
Upon repentance, and being baptized they would have the Holy Spirit Living in them
Not to be confused with your salvation
Acts 19:2 “And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.””
This is a one time event… Once we have been baptized by the Holy Spirit He dwells with us forever
Infilling of The Holy Spirit
Infilling of The Holy Spirit
In the book of Acts we read about 6 instances in which someone is filled with the Holy Spirit and then does some courageous or divine act
Acts 6:5 (ESV)
And what they said pleased the whole gathering, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit...
And Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people.
The infilling of the Holy Spirit is something we need daily
It is because of the Holy Spirit that we are filled with grace, and power to do what Jesus declared
In each instance the person being filled steps into a powerful divine work
How to Receive the Holy Spirit
How to Receive the Holy Spirit
Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John,
who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit,
for he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.
Washed by the Word
Believe in Jesus Christ
Praying and Laying on of Hands
The Holy Spirit is entirely the fulfillment of the divine promise for the believer
Through the Holy Spirit we receive power, grace, and authority
