Intro:
Announcement of the Judgment
Foretold by Enoch
7th in line from Adam.
Not much is said in Scripture, but what we are told is significant
Now Jude adds to the mystery of Enoch by revealing he was also a prophet!
He foretold of the coming judgment
The Holy Spirit revealed to Jude that Enoch had been a prophet.
God spoke through Enoch, and now He speaks through Jude about Enoch’s prophesy.
He spoke of the judgment day which was to come when Jesus returned with His holy ones to execute judgment on Earth.
Agents of the Judgment
Jude reveals that Enoch had foretold of the return of the “holy ones” to execute Judgment
Holy Ones
There are 2 possible groups which fit this
Angels will carry out God’s judgment
Saints too have a role to play in the judgment
Both is another possible interpretation
Believers have a role to play when Christ returns and angels are specifically mentioned as executing God’s judgment.
Either way is in line with the Scriptures
Both is where I see this.
We both return with Him
Believers will serve as judges with Him (mainly as observers in His judgment)
Angels will carry out His judgment
Judgment
execute Judgment
Ultimate sentence is condemnation to eternal Hell
There is no escaping the final judgment when the Lord returns to Earth at His second coming
The time for repentance will be over
All who were never born again receive their condemnation at that time.
Jesus told a parable of wheat and tares in 13th ch of Matthew
The coming Judgment is a certainty
None can escape
You will either be a Holy One with God or face His wrath
The choice you make determines in which group you will be counted
Aim of Judgment
Ungodly sinners
Their lack of repentance leaves them in their sins and a target of judgment
Christ’s sacrifice on the cross paid the penalty and provided parole and pardon for all who repent and trust Him alone for salvation
Sadly, the ungodly sinners reject the gospel and are objects of wrath
We would all be among them if not for receiving God’s grace!
Praise GOD that we don’t have to pay for our sin!
Praise GOD that He made a way for us to set free!
Ungodly Actions
Ungodly sinners act in ungodly ways
Enoch mentions them in general in vs 15
He then gives specific examples of these actions in v 16
This list focuses on the same apostates and false teachers Jude has been calling to task in his letter
Grumblers
same Greek word used in LXX to describe those who in Israel who murmured against God
God had given freedom, and victory, yet they weren’t satisfied!
instead of seeking food from God in faith, they complained
God sent manna
That wasn’t good enough!!!
Grumblers will grumble!
Malcontents
These people complain and are dissatisfied with GOD’s will
We are called to be content
Yet many find fault with their situation
IN fact, that is at the heart of much of the false teaching
They use our own covetousness to stir discontent and convince us that God wants us to have material wealth, health, and power.
That is true for some of us
Yet is is just as true that some of us will never have that!
It is up to God Almighty!
Yet false teachers have told sick people it is due to a lack of faith!
God didn’t remove Paul’s thorn in the flesh.
It was not a matter of faith, but of GRACE!
God wanted to keep Paul dependent upon Him
Followers of own Sinful desires
They follow their lusts rather than the Lord
Jude has already explained how the false teachers and apostates ignored the Word of God to listen to their own desires
They ignore clear teachings of God and find ways to justify doing what they want
Loud Boasters
They are arrogant and put their arrogance on full display.
They claim an authority which isn’t theirs to claim!
I recently heard a montage of several false prophets claiming to have power to diffuse a hurricane and make it nothing.
They each declared a victory over the storms and every time, 100% of the time the storms came ashore and did record levels of damage
Along the way, they arrogantly said, “I command the hosts of heaven to....”
That is blasphemy!
They are claiming to have authority which God alone has!
Showing Favoritism
They are flatterers!
They show favoritism and flatter to get their way
They tell others what they want to hear in order to fleece them for more money
Since these actions are condemned, we should work to keep ourselves free from them!
CONCL
We can all find ourselves in these verses:
Believers-
we are with the holy ones coming back with Christ at the 2nd coming.
All because of Him and for His glory
Ungoldly
Those under judgment
By our testimony, we are believers.
Are we living like it?
