Psalm 98:1–9 ESV
1 Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. 2 The Lord has made known his salvation; he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations. 3 He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. 4 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises! 5 Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody! 6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord! 7 Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; the world and those who dwell in it! 8 Let the rivers clap their hands; let the hills sing for joy together 9 before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity.
What is this psalm about?
Psalm 98:1 ESV
1 Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.
“Sing to the Lord a new song for He has done marvelous things.”
This is a plea to sing (praises) to the Lord!
Do you want to know how important this is?
Is 6:1-3/ (My most favorite verse on the heart of worship)
Luke 2:13-14 / On night Jesus’ birth!
Eph 5:19 / Singing not ALSO an integral part our relationship with each other!
Singing praises is a huge part of God existence and (should be) equally as huge in terms of our relationship to Him.
(For you extreme introverts here) I’m sorry, I’m afraid sing together to the Lord is unavoidable.)
But not only is it important to know THAT we sing praises to God
We MUST under WHY we sing praises to Him.
Psalm 98:1 ESV
1 Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.
for HE has done marvelous things!
All of Creation (see verses 7-8)
Human body
skin that heals
Reb Blood cell production
Main purpose - Oxygen to body
20-30 trillion red blood cells in adults
Production is self regulating
2.5 million per second
270 million hemoglobin molecules per Red Blood Cell
Paul was right to tell Romans:
Romans 1:20 ESV
20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
his eternal power and divine nature,
Psalm 98:1 ESV
1 Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.
His right hand and his holy arm - represent His POWER
God has done what no other “authority” could
provide salvation!
Salvation from their enemies
Salvation from eternal punishment of sin.
We sing praises to God because He provided salvation to the world.
Psalm 98:2 ESV
2 The Lord has made known his salvation; he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations.
He has made known salvation!
18th century - Deism
philosophical position - (obscured Rom 12)
God cannot be known by revelation
God known by observation & logic
God created and then left us
No relationship is possible?!!!! (nonsense!!!!)
Consider how God has moved throughout history
God has always been present
Called out one man (Abram) & created a nation (Israel)
Through wars, sin, oppression the nation remains.
From that nation came 1 man Jesus. (God in the flesh)
Through wars, sin, oppression the church remains.
Church of Afghanistan
For context of how the church started
God starting this in present day Afghanistan
Imagine the hostility against the young church
Yet it not only prevailed, it also grew, spread all over the world.
Why is the church to resilient?
Because the church is IN YOU (Holy Spirit)
We sing praises to God because we can know Him personally.
Psalm 98:3 ESV
3 He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
Steadfast love and faithfulness.
The House of Isreal
God made them a people who were not a people
The responded by rejecting him.
One thing we can see in God’s dealing with the house of Israel is God Steadfast Love and Faithfulness.
That’s good news for us, who are all sinners (Romans 3:23)
This leads us to my final point for why we sing praises to God.
Illustrations: windows to our stories.
I Want to Know its Dead.
Driving from Grand Canyon to San Antonio
Driving through Albuquerque New Mexico.
Tarantula climbing up my leg
Randall - flick/ not smash
It came back. So I had Melissa get it.
Universal insect weaponry - paper towel
Checked and it was not there.
Headed to San Antonio via West Texes (all night)
West Texas as NOTHING .... for miles and miles
My fear: when we finally pass another car
glow from the headlights would illuminate the interior of the van. I would glance back at my sleeping little babies...
and see a tarantula climbing across their face!
Sometimes you’ve got to KNOW it’s dead!
That’s the same with our sin.
Maybe you’ve tried several times to just git rid of that part of your life. You want that old self to just die!
But you don’t want to hear about it dead.
You don’t want to assume it’s dead.
You need to KNOW it is dead.
This verse reminds us of a the most personal reason why we sing praise to God.
verse one proclaimed the need to sing NEW SONG
Psalm 98:1 ESV
1 Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.
We sing praises to God because we can sing a NEW SONG
Because when you are going through that time in your life where you feel isolated from the world, in the middle of nowhere. And you just know that you are going to look up and see what you had hoped (prayed) was dead and gone!
You can sing a new song because you are a new creation!
The OLD IS DEAD and GONE.
When Jesus died on the cross and offered the ONLY way to have salvation over our sins.
This remains an offer of ETERNAL forgiveness
From a God who has shown that his love is steadfast and faithful!
Next song begins by proclaiming:
There's nothing worth more that will ever
come close
No thing can compare You're our
living hope
Your Presence Lord
