Introduction:
We are about two months into our walk through 1 Peter. As we study together, our goal is not to have an exhaustive study, but kind of an overview. Today we are skipping a good chunk of chapter three to get into chapter 4.
Peter was a disciple of the the Lord Jesus Christ. He walked with him, lived with him, dined with him throughout his public ministry. Peter studied the Lord, he was corrected often by the Lord. He was loved by the Lord. He knew what it meant to have a relationship with God. After the death of the Lord, Peter went out to minister himself, planting churches, leading people - it is from all of that experience that he writes to us.
We believe that the bible is the word of God, that it is inspired by Him, for His people. We commit ourselves to the faithful study of it, and to allowing it to shape who we are. From that perspective, lets open the word together.
Recap 3
Last week we studied part of chapter 3, the rest of that chapter describes the suffering of Christ, it details the incredible work that he accomplished on the cross
1 Peter 3:18 CSB
For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit,
then it starts to talk about baptism - and comparing baptism to the story of Noah and the flood. At this moment - we aren’t going to get into that on any deep level. If you have not been baptized, and want to - these are some of the scriptures that we will talk about and study together. Lets pray.
Sermon - Living as Exiles; Living for God’s will
1 Peter 4:1–3 CSB
Therefore, since Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same understanding—because the one who suffers in the flesh is finished with sin— in order to live the remaining time in the flesh no longer for human desires, but for God’s will. For there has already been enough time spent in doing what the Gentiles choose to do: carrying on in unrestrained behavior, evil desires, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, and lawless idolatry.
1 Peter 4:1 CSB
Therefore, since Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same understanding—because the one who suffers in the flesh is finished with sin—
Therefore - take into consideration the things that came before this - in particular, that Christ suffered in the flesh.
Peter was writing to a group of people who had suffered, and would suffer later.. he has been writing about suffering quite a lot and continues that thought process throughout this chapter.
1 Peter 4:12 CSB
Dear friends, don’t be surprised when the fiery ordeal comes among you to test you, as if something unusual were happening to you.
1 Peter 4:13 CSB
Instead, rejoice as you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may also rejoice with great joy when his glory is revealed.
1 Peter 4:14 CSB
If you are ridiculed for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.
Suffering is a part of their identity as exiles, and becomes part of ours as well. The world we live in is not going to give you favor. It might even come a point - like it did with the disciples that we have to die awful - painful deaths.
Peter reminds us that Christ suffered. We are in good company when we suffer. But that isn’t the end of the story. As we acknowledge that Christ suffered, Peter says - Arm yourselves with the same understanding that Christ had.
Arm yourselves with the same understanding.
Lets expand that sentence a little bit.
To arm yourself means to put on armor; so that you can be defended. Armor is protective in nature.
To arm yourself also means to carry a weapon; so that you can be offensive as well. To be armed is to be dangerous.
There is an offensive and defensive nature to being armed.
Paul writes extensively about being armed in the book of Ephesians - he says to put on the full armor of God.
Peter echos that by saying to Arm yourselves with the same understanding - we are to take an offensive and deffensive stance toward suffering, by having the same understanding as Christ.
1 Peter 4:1 ESV
Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,
The ESV, which is more of a word for word translation of the Bible, a more literal translation, says it like this - Arm yourself with the same way of thinking. So what does that look like?
I am going to suffer, like Christ, so I should take on the same way of thinking as Christ. What does Christ think?
Peter gives a description of the Lord in
1 Peter 2:21–24 CSB
For you were called to this, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. He did not commit sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth; when he was insulted, he did not insult in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten but entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree; so that, having died to sins, we might live for righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
Jesus resisted sin.
He did not seek vengeance
He intentionally put his trust in God.
Peter is recapping what he saw Jesus do during his suffering. He is giving us a description of what he saw, what he heard about.
He says - “we knew the Lord was suffering, we saw the blood coming from his eyes and pores, we know the anguish he was in.” and this was what we saw.
We saw the most compassionate person we had ever known, continue to be that way.
We saw opportunity for Him to sin, and He refused.
We saw a time that it would have been perfectly understandable for him to call down legions of angels and free himself, and destroy Rome and everyone who persecuted him.. and he refused.
He put his trust in God the Father.
And we know in this verse, in our context, that Sin is still a primary issue. The person who suffers in the flesh has ceased in sin.
1 Peter 1:13 CSB
Therefore, with your minds ready for action, be sober-minded and set your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 2:11 CSB
Dear friends, I urge you as strangers and exiles to abstain from sinful desires that wage war against the soul.
We struggle with those things. We struggle with sin. Because - we need it. We lose our temper, thats me!
Our lives get so miserable that we just have to - - - -
Parks and Rec - Treat Yourself
There would be too much trouble if I told the truth, I should really just stretch that one out.
We like to get even, too.
Given the opportunity - we decide to seek vengeance when we can. Thankfully, we don’t get the chance. Thankfully, God has not given Adam Johnson command of the Hosts, the Angels, the powers that Jesus could command. Because there are times that I don’t do so well at this instruction.
Put your trust fully in the Lord.
That requires a relationship that you build over time. To trust in God the way that Jesus did - requires a relationship. And we struggle with that too. Jesus becomes an estranged cousin at times in our lives… yeah - we know who he is, but we aren’t inviting him to dinner today, we have our own things going on.
Peter writes to us to say - arm yourselves with the thoughts and understandings that Jesus had, knowing what this world brings.
He says to adopt this lifestyle of Jesus - one without sin, without vengeance, and depentent on God… and that is only the tip of the iceberg of the understanding that Jesus had. The thought process that he went through.
But if we can adopt that mindset.. that heartset… that we will be better for it. And that is the only way to accomplish the goals that we are presented with.
Our Goal:
1 Peter 4:2 CSB
in order to live the remaining time in the flesh no longer for human desires, but for God’s will.
Ephesians 5:16 CSB
making the most of the time, because the days are evil.
We are coming to the end.
I don’t want to do it the same way I have always been doing it.
I want to be in God’s will. I want my will to be aligned with his.
Psalm 37:4 CSB
Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires.
Our why:
1 Peter 4:3 CSB
For there has already been enough time spent in doing what the Gentiles choose to do: carrying on in unrestrained behavior, evil desires, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, and lawless idolatry.
In Business, when you are making choices you are supposed to go through a process to consider all of the options. CBA, SWAT analysis..
In the spiritual realm - The consideration has already been made.
There is an acknowlegdement - We have been living our lives the same way as the world for far too long.
1 Peter 4:3 CSB
For there has already been enough time spent in doing what the Gentiles choose to do: carrying on in unrestrained behavior, evil desires, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, and lawless idolatry.
There is nothing written in the bible that doesn’t need to be there, for our sakes.
Peter says that we need to get this figured out. To Arm ourselves with the mindset of Christ.
Communion:
1 Corinthians 11:22–30 CSB
Don’t you have homes in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What should I say to you? Should I praise you? I do not praise you in this matter! For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. So, then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sin against the body and blood of the Lord. Let a person examine himself; in this way let him eat the bread and drink from the cup. For whoever eats and drinks without recognizing the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself. This is why many are sick and ill among you, and many have fallen asleep.
