Love Your Neighbor- Discipleship Rhythms
Discipleship Rhythms
Introduction Story
Introduce myself briefly
Graduated a couple months back
Senior Trip
Stranded on the side of the road
Called everyone who should have helped and they said they couldn’t
A random Church in Albuquerque came to our rescue
They got us a mechanic from their Church who fixed our van
It was on a Saturday
They picked us up in their Church van
They bought us all dinner
They got small group leaders to come and pick us up and gave each of us a place to sleep at 10 different houses
They cooked us a huge breakfast and hugged us all goodby when we left the next morning
Why is this story the exception? Why is surprising that a Church, that Christians would do this? What is so extraordinary about this?
They loved their neighbor and showed mercy to us
Why? They gained nothing for their own benefit
Why would they do this?
They did this because Jesus has called us to a kind of love that goes out of our way and sacrifices ourselves together as a community to love our neighbors
Jesus wants you to love your neighbor
Where do we get this
Well if you have your bibles or you’ve got the youversion app go to Luke chapter 10, we’ll begin in verse 25
If you don’t know where that’s at, its in the back half of the book between Mark and John
--if you’re using the youversion app, please use the extra time to so graciously offer your wisdom to your neighbor to find it in their physical bibles.
Background
Before we begin, there are few things to note about what is happening in the context.
Jesus seems to be teaching a crowd of people
Main Division I (10:25-28)
25 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27 And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” 28 And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.”

Main Division II (10:29-37)
29 But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ 36 Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” 37 He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”
