Intro

one of the most popular stories in all of the old testament
the introduction of our hero and what will seem like more of a main character than the one for whom the two books are named- they were one book originally

Anointing David

How long will you grieve over Saul?
Go to Bethlehem as if to make a sacrifice so Saul won’t kill you
The elders trembling
All the sons passing by- I have rejected him- same language as Saul
go get the one tending the sheep- we are meant to see a parallel here
somewhere between 10 and 15- ruddy but with pretty eyes
anointed as king even though those present were probably confused still

David playing for Saul

feels a little out of order
David must become the armor bearer after the battle of with Goliath, he is not with the army beforehand and not at Saul’s side
Saul is comforted by the presence of God, even though the power of his Spirit has left him
we are meant to see the spirit before the acts that show it- hence the lack of chronological order

David and Goliath

both armies are large and capable at the time
the philistines offer a champion for single combat
No Israelite believes they can fight him, not even the warrior king Saul who stands a head above the rest and has proven himself
who can defy the living God?
The will of God is with this one, the one who doesn’t put his faith in himself, but in God and his power
not the armor or weapons of the king but of a shepherd
that all the earth may know
smote him at the only opening, cuts off his head and delivers it to Saul
Whose son are you?

Application

what kind of leader is God clearly seeking?
We all love an underdog but being after God’s own heart is so much more than that
his hand is outstretched to all of us, but his heart is in the one who seeks to do his will despite the circumstance
the one who truly lives as though God is living
