 Celebration of Wisdom

 Wisdom in Eternity

 God's first act

God is the creator of wisdom. Wisdom is shown here to be the initial creation of God, the foundation of creation. God does not create wisdom after designing the universe. The universe is not self-explanatory. God's wisdom is shown in every aspect of creation: material, spiritual, and ethical. "The heavens proclaim his righteousness" (Psalm 50:6)

 … points to Jesus

I was appointed from eternity, from the beginning, before the world began. (Proverbs 8:23, NIV - Anglicised)

Wisdom, existing eternally in the Godhead, was said to be "formed" or "brought forth" when it operated in creation, and when it assumed human nature

cf. The Word became flesh (John 1:14, NIV - Anglicised)

Wisdom was there "from the beginning, before the earth was" (8:23)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. (John 1:1-2, NIV - Anglicised)

Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. (1 Corinthians 1:24, NIV - Anglicised)

 Wisdom in Creation

 God's Creation

God used wisdom – mind, intelligence, common sense – in undertaking the creation. The more we know of creation, the more impressive we find wisdom to be.

 Implications

If God needed and used wisdom for creation then we need it for life in that creation

 … points to Jesus

Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. (John 1:3, NIV - Anglicised)

Wisdom is with God during Creation

I was there when he set the heavens in place, when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep, (Proverbs 8:27, NIV - Anglicised)

When God made the heavens, and divided the waters above it and below (Gen. 1:7), Wisdom co-operated

Wisdom, eternal and uncreated, first puts forth its energy in creation … then becomes incarnate, and is now called, "the Firstborn of all creation" (Col. 1:15)

 Wisdom's Joy

 Wisdom and God are inseparable

The personification of wisdom takes a new twist here. God has not only created wisdom and used it to design the rest of creation, he also takes special delight in wisdom. Likewise, wisdom rejoices at being with God.

 picture of mutual constant delight

As wisdom witnessed the progressive formation of the universe, she was filled with delight

We see here echoes of God's evaluation at the end of creation

7 times in the course of creation we read that, as God looked at what He had created, it pleased Him

This culminates in: God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. (Genesis 1:31, NIV - Anglicised)
