38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Can you imagine what it must have been like for the 12 Disciples? Having the Lord Jesus with all the time? At every meal, every conversation, having him right there to pray for them when they felt hurt or discouraged or afraid?
Being able to sit down next to Him and ask Him anything? Any question about life, purpose. creation, divinity?
We might be tempted to think that the 12 had it better than we do because we dont get to do all those things, do we?
Well, the answer is: we do.
Before Jesus went to His Passion he gave his disciples a promise:
16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
then later:
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
Then on the day of Pentecost, after Jesus ascended to Heaven this promise came to pass:
1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
and since then this gift is for all belivers:
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Who is the Holy Ghost?
He is the co-Equal and co-eternal Spirit of the Father and Son. The 3rd Person in the Trinity.
He inspired all of Scripture and brings new life to the beliver in Christ.
Let us this morning to unwrap this incredible Gift.
1: He gives the Christian Assurance
1: He gives the Christian Assurance
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
The Holy Ghost, when He comes to dwell in the Chritian at conversion, for we are the temple of the Holy Ghost:
19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
When He dwells in us, He acts as a wittness to our human spirit that we are indeed born again and saved.
That is why, unlike every single other religion, the Christian does not hope they are saved, or hope they are forgiven, or hope they are going to Heaven.
No! Because of the Holy Spirit we KNOW we are saved. We KNOW we are forgiven. We KNOW we are going to Heaven.
The Holy Spirit assures us that God loves us.
5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
In the same way that a firearlarm makes you know that there is fire, the Holy Ghost makes us know that God loves us, so that there can be no doubt at all.
2: He Transformes the Christian
Do you know what the primarty job of the Holy Spirit is? As God He does many things, but in you life His primary purpose is to transform you into the image of Jesus.
18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
From glory to glory, day by day, small victory by small victory, the Holy Spirit is changing us into the same image as Jesus.
That does not mean that we will become God or anything it means:
5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
He transforms you to think like Jesus, see the world like Jesus, see your life like Jesus, hand problems like Jesus.
How does He do this?
By giving you what Jesus had.
Noone has ever walked on this earth with us much of these 3 things as Jesus had.
Jesus had more righteousness, Peace and more joy than anyone. And that is precisly what the Holy Spirit wants to bring to your life.
17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.
Righteousness by wittnessing that you are indeed justified.
Peace by wittnessing that you indeed are a Chiuld of God.
Joy by wittnessing that you are indeed going to Heaven.
But it does not end here. The Word gives us a full list of what the Holy Spirit brings into our lives if we are led by Him:
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
The characteristics that God wants in our lives are seen in the ninefold fruit of the Spirit.
Paul begins with love because all of the other fruit is really an outgrowth of love.
This word for love is agape, which means divine love.
And we must cultivate it and pray that it will increase.
9 And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;
When a person lives in the sphere of love, then he experiences joy—that inward peace and sufficiency that is not affected by outward circumstances.
This “holy optimism” keeps him going in spite of difficulties.
Love and joy together produce peace,
7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
These first three qualities express the Godward aspect of the Christian life.
The next three express the manward aspect of the Christian life:
long-suffering (courageous endurance without quitting), gentleness (kindness), and goodness (love in action).
The Christian who is long-suffering will not avenge himself or wish difficulties on those who oppose him.
He will be kind and gentle, even with the most offensive, and will sow goodness where others sow evil.
Human nature can never do this on its own; only the Holy Spirit can.
The final three qualities are selfward: faith (faithfulness, dependability); meekness (the right use of power and authority, power under control); and temperance (self-control).
Meekness is not weakness.
Jesus said:
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
yet no one could accuse him of being weak.
The meek Christian does not throw his weight around or assert himself.
Just as wisdom is the right use of knowledge, so meekness is the right use of authority and power.
3: He Transforms our Prayer Life
3: He Transforms our Prayer Life
One thing is very clear in Scripture: We really struggle with Prayer.
26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
So we really need help. The Holy Spirit is our help in prayer:
26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
The Holy Spirit, along with Jesus Christ i might add:
34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
Is constantly making intercession (praying on someone elses behalf) for us to the Father.
The bible says that the Holy Spirit knows our infirmaties.
The picture is one of an infirm frail person who cannot do anything, they cannot sit up, they cannot get out of bed, they cannot even eat - yet a loving, caring, comparional Helper is with them 24 hours a day, helping them do all the things that they need.
No wonder Jesus called the Holy Spirit the Comforter.
