Walking by the Spirit
Introduction
The purpose of this paper is to explore the function of the Spirit in the life of the believer and what it means for the believer to walk by the spirit and synonomous terms.
Walking by the Spirit
Obtaining the Spirit of God John 16:13-14, Acts 1:8, Acts 2:1-4
Jesus promised that all those who believe would receive the Spirit to guide them in truth.
On the day of Pentecost the disciples who had believed, regardless of any ritual or baptism, they recieved the spirit just as Jesus had promised.
Walking as Proximity (Abiding) John 15, Galatians 5:16
Jesus told His disciples to abide in Him, μενο, which implies a proximity and closeness.
Walking by the Spirit also implies a proximity and closeness.
To walk by the spirit and abide in Christ is to actively pursue a mental closeness to the Spirit, setting our minds on Him.
Walking as Presenting Romans 6:12-14, Romans 8:1-14, Colossians 3:1-3
Setting our mind on the Spirit leads us to fulfill the Law
Our flesh is incapable of fulfilling God’s Law, so we must live by the Spirit.
We live by the Spirit when we are presented, setting our minds on Him, and obeying Him.
Conclusion
Walking by the Spirit is primarily an act of faith. We believe that God has given us His enabling power in the Spirit to know and do His will. When our minds are set on these truths, and subsequently set on the Spirit, we can begin to allow Christ to live His life in and through us to obey God’s commands.
