WE'VE SANITIZED, STERILIZED, MORALIZED AND DIVINIZED JESUS BEYOND RECOGNITION.

My hope is to gain a fresh hearing for Jesus, especially among those who believe they already understand him. In his case, quite frankly, presumed familiarity has led to unfamiliarity, unfamiliarity has led to contempt, and contempt has led to profound ignorance. Very few people today find Jesus interesting as a person or of vital relevance to the course of their actual lives. He is not generally regarded as a real-life personality who deals with real-life issues but is thought to be concerned with some feathery realm other than the one we must deal with, and must deal with now. And frankly, he is not taken to be a person of much ability. He is automatically seen as a more or less magical figure—a pawn, or possibly a knight or a bishop, in some religious game—[i]

WE NEED A FRESH VISION OF JESUS. A REALISTIC PICTURE OF HIM.

1 John 1:1–3 ESV

1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— 2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— 3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.

EXPERIENCE. FELLOWSHIP.

KNOWING JESUS WAS TO KNOW LIFE.

IF WE WANT TO KNOW REAL LIFE WE NEED TO KNOW JESUS!

NOT JUST KNOW BUT LOVE.

Mark 12:29–30 ESV

29 Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’

WE CANNOT LOVE A CARICATURE OR AN IDEA OR AN ICON.

WE ARE CALLED TO LOVE A PERSON!

We need Jesus like we need oxygen. Like we need water. Like the branch needs the vine. Jesus is not merely a figure for devotions. He is the missing essence of your existence. Whether we know it or not, we are desperate for Jesus.[i]

..to have Jesus, really have him, is to have the greatest treasure in all worlds. To have his life, joy, love, and presence cannot be compared. To know him as he is, is to come home. A true knowledge of Jesus is our greatest need and our greatest happiness.[ii]

IT'S NOT EASY!

WE'RE SEPARATED BY TIME AND CULTURE.

WE'RE SEPARATED BY RELIGION.

WE'RE SEPARATED BY AN ENEMY WHO WILL DO ANYTHING TO KEEP US FROM JESUS.

2 Corinthians 4:4 ESV

4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

BUT WE ARE NOT ON OUR OWN!

JESUS HAS GIVEN US HIS SPIRIT SO THAT WE CAN KNOW HIM!!!

15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him.
