Peter’s Denial
Peter’s Denial
Peter full of confidence told Jesus if all these others fail I wont
He went on to deny knowing the Lord 3 times
satan the father of lies will keep us down by reminding us of our failures
Peter was probably still feeling as a failure
How could Jesus trust me ever again?
Do I even deserve to be an apostle?
How can anything good come from me?
maybe I’ll be better off going back to fishing
What a mess I have made of my life
there is nothing that Peter can do to fix this problem
Except confess, and put his life into the hands of Jesus
Jesus is now coming to Peter and confronting the issue
Last week we saw Jesus confronting the issue about the fish
now its personal to Peter
Read John 21 15-25
Pray
Simon
Simon
Jesus calls Peter, Simon
Now when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs!”
Simon was his name when Jesus met him
Simon means pebble, not very stable, shifting
Jesus then changed his name to Peter(rock)
foundation of the Church
Jesus here calling him Simon is reminding him of his weakness
Peter the night before, without any fish, was first reminded of his weakness
we are all weak, our fleshly desires often win,
For what I am doing I do not understand, because what I want to do, this I do not practice, but what I hate, this I do.
even Paul says that the sin he hates; he does
the good that he likes; he doesn't do
our old nature is always there to bring us down
therefore we have to be on guard against it
Peter’s old nature of being a unstable person showed up before the cross
we also were different people before the cross
Do You Love Me?
Do You Love Me?
Now when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs!”
Do you Agape love me more than these?
do you love me like I love you
I gave my life for you
I took the wrath of The Father for your sin
for the denials you gave
you said before that you did
in your bravado you said that you love me unconditionally
Peter replied I love you like a brother
Peter could not honestly say “I agape you”
Again Jesus asks
He said to him again a second time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Shepherd my sheep!”
Do you unconditionally love me?
Peter again says “I love you like a brother”
The Third time
He said to him a third time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was distressed because he said to him a third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything! You know that I love you!” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep!
Peter was distressed he was being publicly asked the third time
why 3 because of the the 3 denials
Did the rest of the apostles know this?
but Peter knew and Jesus knew of this sin
its best for Peter to have all the cards on the table
to be publicly forgiven for all his sin
instead of wondering the rest of his life
Jesus comes down to Peters level
Do you love me like a brother?
Peter said, you know I do
Every thing good that I have has been put there by you
Having the Holy Spirit in us gives us the fruit of the Spirit
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, self control. Against such things there is no law.
Now those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh together with its feelings and its desires.
Peters Commissioning
Peters Commissioning
what was Jesus instructions for Peter?
Feed my lambs/ the young converts/ the children
Shepherd my sheep/ shepherd the church, protect, feed, nurture
Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock among which the Holy Spirit has appointed you as overseers, to shepherd the church of God which he obtained through the blood of his own Son.
Feed my sheep/ the old saints
Follow me V 19 As I lead you you lead the Church
you Peter are very important to me
you take my example and care for my flock
nourish, protect, care for them
that love you have for me now; I will increase it
you will need that love, to love my flock
You love me now, love my sheep
Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.
these are for us as well we all should have sheep we are shepherding
Were All Different
Were All Different
Jesus is now going to tell Peter his future death
Truly, truly I say to you, when you were young, you tied your clothes around yourself and walked wherever you wanted. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will tie you up and carry you where you do not want to go.
Jesus tells Peter he will die on the cross
he will be executed as a criminal
(Now he said this to indicate by what kind of death he would glorify God.) And after he had said this, he said to him, “Follow me!”
Jesus says to Peter follow me
3 times Jesus said take care of my flock
2 times Jesus said follow me V 22
Through the Holy Spirit I will lead you
Through My Holy Scriptures I will teach you
Follow me
the death of Peter will Glorify God
the suffering of saints brings glory to God
speaking of Paul
For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.”
For I consider that the sufferings of the present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is about to be revealed to us.
Peter is now going to compare himself with John
Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them (who also leaned back on his chest at the dinner and said, “Lord, who is the one betraying you?”)
what about him
we are always comparing ourselves with others
their church is bigger than ours
they are always bringing in new people
he preaches a lot better than I
their ministry seems to be thriving
their life seems to be together
they don’t have the problems that I do
what about them?
Jesus said to him, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!”
There is only 1 person you need to think about, you
let me Jesus says take care of the rest of the world
You concern your self with your
Ministry, flock, problems, family, life, spiritual gifts
God has a plan distinctly for every one of his flock
Individual plans just for them/ you
the way your life, ministry, temperament, health, and death
will glorify Him
you have been saved by God to be a part of the bride of Christ
you have been commissioned to do a particular function in the Church
your life and death has been lovingly planned by the almighty. for His glory
don’t go comparing to others, and thinking if only
