Meeting the Need

4:32-37
The circumstances of this early church necessarily caused need among its members. They exemplify their loyalty to Christ by doing all they can to provide for those needs. The result is that none among their number remain in need. Barnabas is introduced to us as an example of this kind of generosity. I would highlight both the extraordinary lengths these disciples went to as well the extraordinary circumstances that called for those actions.

Looking for Praise

5:1-10
Several points to make here. Ananias and Sapphira wanted praise more than they actually wanted to help people. It would have not been sinful for them to keep part or even all of the property. But they wanted to be considered among the most commited without actually being that commited. They are given opportunities to come clean before the judgment falls. The judgment is severe and reminds us of Lev. 10 at the beginning of Israel’s covenant.

The Effect of Discipline

5:11-16
Fear is a legitimate reaction here. This event cause many to keep their distance. But it caused many others to join. But in each case, this event produced clarity so that those who were uncertain did not join and those who did join did so with great conviction. This discipline did not stop growth, but it did increase its quality.

Obeying God Rather than Men

5:17-32
This is just like when we are told to wear masks. God doesn’t want us to go around with our faces covered up in shame or fear. FAITH OVER FEAR!!!

The Wisdom of Men

5:33-42
I have a little different take on this than many. I think Gamaliel’s advice is only good in the political or horizontal plane. Blasphemy shouldn’t have been taken lightly. His advice has its place but I think it is the advice of someone who’d like to maintain his comfortable place rather than someone who is zealous for the Lord. It looks all the more cowardly when they actually beat the apostles before releasing them. Of course, we note the peculiar reaction of the apostles to being beaten.

Meeting Another Need

6:1-6
Here we see how the apostles have actually started a racist cult in which they remain aloof and disconnected to the needs of the marginalized. They don’t even consider these outsiders important enough to stop what they are doing to meet their felt needs. Thankfully, the congregation finds honorable social justice warriors among its members who will do the hard work of anti-racism.
