1. Why should we speak in tongues?
A. Jesus promised it.
Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city [m]of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.” Luke 24:49
And these signs will follow those who [d]believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they[e] will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” Mark 16:17-18
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be [a]witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8
B. John the Baptist prophesied it.
I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” Mark 1:8
C. Paul encouraged it.
I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all; 1 Cor 14:8
What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding. 1 Cor 14:15
2. Do you have to speak in tongues to go to heaven?
A. No.
And he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.” Acts 16:30-31
...that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9
B. Speaking in Tongues is for believers.
And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. John 20:22
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Matt 28:18
*They were already born again and had spiritual authority. Jesus said to wait for power.
3. I heard tongues were of the devil?
A. God promised you wouldn’t receive a demon when asking for the Holy Spirit.
So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11 If a son asks for [e]bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” Luke 11:9-13
B. The Holy Spirit did not change into a demon. God’s kingdom is not divided against itself.
But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand. Matt 12:25
4. I heard tongues ceased?
Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is [d]perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.
1 Cor 13:8-10
· No date was given.
· Knowledge has not vanished.
· To be consistent - if the subject before and after aren't done away with, why take out the one in the middle and say it is?
Randy Clark in his 2018 book "Eyewitness to Miracles" explains that the Baptist Seminary he went to had them read about a number of revivals that sounded just like Baptist churches. Come to find out- they had "sanitized" all the stories and rewrote them without the Miracles and the gifts of the Spirit.
The truth is there has always been a move of the Spirit of God throughout the centuries.
5. I heard God doesn't give everyone the gift of tongues?
Do all speak with tongues? 1 Cor 12:30
A. God is not a respecter of persons.
Then Peter opened his mouth and said: “In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. 35 But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him. Acts 10:34-35
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. 45 And [o]those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Acts 10:44-45
But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, Jude 20 NKJV
1 Cor 12 is not speaking about the baptism of the Holy Spirit for the individual believer. It is speaking of ministry gifts for service. 1 Cor 12-14 was written to bring balance into the church without doing away with them.
Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. 28 And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the [i]best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way. 1 Cor 12:27-31
6. I heard that tongues were just for the disciples/apostles?
14 Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, 15 who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 16 For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. 18 And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, 19 saying, “Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” Acts 8:14-19
45 And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God...Acts 10:45-46
And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples 2 he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John’s baptism.” 4 Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.” 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. Acts 19:1-6
I wish you all spoke with tongues...1 Cor 14:5
