I hope you have enjoyed our quick tour through the short books at the back of the Old Testament. Thy tell us a lot about God, His views, and His plans. We are continuing that our study today with more about His plans.

Review

Theme: God is King of everything and everyone Found in todays theme verse
God is the Lord of Hosts - Yahweh with His armies at the ready.
Zech 12.6 told us about the Jewish people coming back in unbelief. They have so far tried to protect themselves. However, Josh preached Zec 4.6
Zechariah 4:6 ESV
Then he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.
The Jewish people have not turned to their Messiah yet, but have done things by their own power. That too will change.
Last week we talked about the 2 phrases “I will/Lord will” And the Phrase “in that day”. We continue with those this week. [10x each in Hebrew manuscripts]
“Look on Me whom they pierced” in 12.10 is key to showing the return of Christ and that is also important for todays passage.

13 The changes that come from their weeping displayed their repentance.

A.God opens up a fountain of forgiveness.

Zechariah 13:1 ESV
“On that day there shall be a fountain opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and uncleanness.
Fountain

B. Idolatry and false worship are cut off from the flock by God. 2-6

No one will want to be a prophet because everyone will be satisfied by the presence of Christ.
Yet false prophets will still be found. Sometimes they will be spotted by what they say and sometimes by the very scars left from cultic worship and idolatrous lovers.

C.A dramatic shift is made back to the Chief Shepherd 7-9

To make sure people get that Jesus is this Shepherd and Companion, the second section of verse 7 gives us another thing that is fulfilled in the life of Christ.
Zechariah 13:7 ESV
“Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, against the man who stands next to me,” declares the Lord of hosts. “Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered; I will turn my hand against the little ones.
Jesus quoted this so people would know it was about Him as Shepherd and His followers are those who scattered.
Matthew 26:31 ESV
Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’
Also found in Mark 14.27 where it repeats the same quote from Jesus.
The Second Coming of Christ to the Earth will be much different than His First Advent.

D.The Second Coming to earth is more like a furnace to purify as He establishes His kingdom on earth. verses 8-9

“refine them like silver”
“2/3rds shall be cut off”
“1/3 through the fire” We believe this to be the last 3.5 years of the Tribulation Period
This is due to the wrath of God poured out on those who do not believe and will not repent. Chapter 14 will talk more about this refinement time.

14 The Day of the Lord is coming

A.This is still future.

Some of the descriptions we have here match perfectly with other passages in the Bible. This passage gives us some details we don’t get details on elsewhere.
Notice 2a is saying God is leading the nations to this point.
Zechariah 14:2 ESV
For I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city shall be taken and the houses plundered and the women raped. Half of the city shall go out into exile, but the rest of the people shall not be cut off from the city.

B.Our officially believes the following concerning future events.

Remember, you do not have to agree to attend here. This is not a matter of orthadoxy or as important as the matters of Salvation. Most churches have people of a wide range of future events beliefs.
Chart!
1. As He gathers them, and before His return Bad things are once again happening to the Jewish people.
The mid point of the Tribulation period, the battle of Gog and Magog, is when the Anti Christ breaks the treaty with Israel and sets himself up as god in the Temple that he helped them get built in the previous 3.5 years. The world leaders then start to grossly mistreat the people of Israel.

The Antichrist has moved into Jerusalem, broken his covenant with the Jews, and made the temple his headquarters for worldwide worship. See 2 Thes. 2 and Rev. 13. During the last half of the Tribulation, the kings of the earth will begin to assemble for that great final battle, the Battle of Armageddon (Rev. 16:12–16; 19:19–21). Note in Zech. 14:1–2 that Jerusalem does suffer terribly in this battle before the Lord returns to deliver her.

The amillennialist view that this prophecy was fulfilled when Titus destroyed Jerusalem in A.D. 70 is absurd. Rome was a single nation, not "all nations." Our Lord didn't fight against the Romans. His feet did not stand on the Mount of Olives. Nor has any other siege of Jerusalem fulfilled this prophecy. It is still in the future. By DR. DANIEL FUCHS; THE CHOSEN PEOPLE; OCTOBER 1981
2. Verse 5 is important to our understanding of all the timing.
Rev 19.14 shows they are dressed in white. Therefore it is the saints who have been given robes of white to express their redemption!

Everyone will worship Jesus! 14.16-21

A.Worship is mentioned twice in two verses

Zechariah 14:16 ESV
Then everyone who survives of all the nations that have come against Jerusalem shall go up year after year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Booths.
Zechariah 14:17 ESV
And if any of the families of the earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, there will be no rain on them.
Worship is important because it is a right response to our relationship with a righteous God!

B.Notice that this cant be the eternal state or Heaven, because some can disobey and need punishment. 17-19

Zechariah 14:19 ESV
This shall be the punishment to Egypt and the punishment to all the nations that do not go up to keep the Feast of Booths.
God does not punish sinlessness, so we must conclude they are sinning by failing to worship.

C.Holiness and reminders to holiness will abound! 20-21

Debate over the ending words of the book. I favour the group that say there is an end to racism and a need for nationalism.
The debate is over the Hebrew word translated by some as Canaanite and by others versions as traders. It was used for both those who engaged in commerce, but was more commonly used as a negative slang word for Canaanite people.

Conclusion: God is King of everything and everyone! As of today, His plan is not finished. He continues to work His plan.

Zechariah has given us a lot of encouragement. It helped us see that The Lord’s armies are patrolling the earth to bring us peace.
He has told of the trustworthiness of both Old and New Testament books.
He has given us heaps of prophecies so that we would know how to spot God’s anointed Saviour!
He has also given us lots to look forward to seeing as God unfolds His future plans.
1.Is Christ your Shepherd?
2.Are we comforted by God’s “Day of the Lord” or in fear of it?
3.What can we do to help others be on the right side of God’s plan?
