Was Sad, Now Happy.
have you ever had something that was sad but also just so happy?
I will be honest with you, when we came to Vermilion I was sad but happy, you see as the events that lead to us leaving our home in Sask and coming here I was sad for the people that I was leaving behind.
My family, my friends, my parents dog who I love.
However the longer it has been since that event I have started to love it even more, as time contiunes I have even more joy becuase of everthing that has come from that decision and that action to move here.
I have made new friends started this exciting new ministry, met all of you!
I was sad but now I am happy
The same is how we should come to the table of communion.
we should no longer be sad but we should find incredible joy at the communion table.
What is something that has made you sad at first but know you are happy about it?
Which is a stronger emotion sorrow or joy?
The Bread
When we talk about communion we partake in the two elements, the bread and the cup.
Now the bread specifically has siginifagince becuase of Israel’s past.
This is the account of the lords supper
Matthew 26: 17-19
Pass over is the day when the angel of death passed over egypt and killed the first born in every house.
It’s a important day for the Jewish people of israel, God’s Chosen people.
So Jesus draws in a connect to this narrative of the pass over when it says
When we see this account in Exodus we notice Jesus is re-writting this narrative, Jesus is now breaking this bread that they did in Exodus not becuase they will be saved now but rather that he is instead that salvation.
Jesus is now the bread and its importance, it no longer symbolizes that freedom from opression but rather a greater freedom from sin that was Jesus on the cross.
It says, in Mt 26 26
Now we see Jesus in fullness as he is the conclusion of this taking this bread and bring that diffrenet context.
So when we take the bread we are looking at Jesus and his work on the cross as this momment of freedom, that becuase Jesus broke that bread he in the same way broke the bondage of sin.
How does the bread broken for us encourage us to follow Jesus?
The Cup
Then all of the sudden Jesus takes the cup gives thanks and says thanks then he invites others to drink of it and enter into this new convenant.
In the day of Abraham, God makes this covenant with Abram that he will fill the world with his decentants if he is true to God’s word.
all the sudden Jesus is inviting us all into this covenant.
This covenant has a abundance of blessings that is even greater then a long legacy of family.
Jesus invites us into a covenant of the forgivness of sins, and there will not be a better covenenat that will be given until Jesus returns and we share a new drink or a new covenant in the kingdom of God.
Covenant is a fancy word, but what does it mean to make a covenant or agreement?
What happens when a covenant/agreement is one sided, meaning you don’t have to put any effort in.
So when we look at this covenant that is the cup we must excitingly agree, it is no longer a sad event but rather one of utter most joy!
Jesus has invited us into the forgiveness of sins because his body has been broken for us.
There is nothing more exciting.
Communion
When we take communion it is a reminder of this invitation to accept that covenant of Jesus.
We are reminded that Jesus has died and overcome the opression of sin, but through his blood we get that oppertunity to share into this coveant of Jesus.
So, how we approach the table is important.
When we walk to accept communion it should not be a weight on our shoulders that reminds us of our sin but rather a remind of the covenant that has free’d us from the sin that once weighed us down.
Take joy in communion, you are celebrating that Jesus died becuase you know the full story, he did not stay dead but he conquered death and rose from the grave.
When the disciples took communion is was a sorrowful event.
since they did not know Jesus would conquer death, nor did they really understand that Jesus had to die for their sins and the sins of the world.
When we take communion it is a joyful event.
We know the end of the narrative, Jesus died on the cross for our sins and rose again, so we can celebrate his great works on the cross that it was not in vein but rather had this glorious purpose for our lives.

Have joy in Chirst becuase you are apart of this coveneant that will remain until we meet again with Jesus in the fathers kingdom, nothing can remove you from this covenant with Jesus, its just you and him until he comes again.
Even then there is nothing but joy for being with him.
