Context of this passage(5:1-12)

Jesus is speaking to his disciples and the large crowds as this new and greater Moses.
He has declared the beatitudes over his audience.
It is only after union with Christ as our fulfilment that we can have these new affections.
It is in this context that Jesus describes the result his disciples will have if they keep the beatitudes.
Jesus’ warnings against abolishing the OT will be important in 5:21-48

Consequences of this passage(vs. 13-16)

True believers will be conformed into the image of our Savior!
Christians should affect the culture as:
Salt- preserve from decay and corruption
Light- expose sin and wickedness
City on a hill- as an example and model
I was asked why I acted the way I did at work one day. I presented the gospel to my coworkers.

Culmination of this passage (vs. 17-20)

Jesus is the completion and fulfillment of the Law and Prophets (vs. 17 & 20)
God’s commandments and promises never pass away! (v.19)
Do you read the OT?
Do you try to rightly interpret and apply the OT law?
Do we understand the general equity of the law?
We are not slaves to the OT but free to obey it.
