2 Timothy 1

2 Timothy 1:1–2 ESV
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God according to the promise of the life that is in Christ Jesus, To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
Author—Paul, formerly know as Saul, conversion in Acts 9
Apostle—a man on a mission with a message, A man chosen by Jesus, sent on a mission for Jesus, with a message about Jesus, or His kingdom
Audience—his beloved child Timothy, his protege, his apprentice
Address—Grace, God’s enabling power, mercy, God’s compassion, and peace, God’s stability and tranquility. God as our spiritual Father and Christ Jesus as our Lord are the source, through the Holy Spirit, of these necessary provisions for our daily Christian life.
2 Timothy 1:3 ESV
I thank God whom I serve, as did my ancestors, with a clear conscience, as I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day.
Paul thanks God for Timothy, and remembers him constantly in his prayers.
He says this in between those two phrases, “whom I serve with a clear conscience”
what does he mean by this or how can he say this?
Is he perfect, never making any mistakes?
Can we say this? Not if we misunderstand what he’s saying.
Romans 7:14–25 ESV
For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
So how can Paul say he serves God with a clear conscience? He has an awareness that he is seeking to be obedient, striving to be holy, pleasing and acceptable
Romans 12:1–2 ESV
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Can we now say this? How does this mentality help us?
2 Timothy 1:4–5 ESV
As I remember your tears, I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.
Paul has a history with Timothy, a love for Timothy, and Timothy apparently loves Paul as well.
So this allows Paul to speak into Timothy’s life
2 Timothy 1:6–7 ESV
For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
For this reason—because of his love for him and for Jesus
Fan into flame—talk through this imagery
Fan—breathe life
into—already existing small fire
flame—large roaring flame, powerful
The gift of God??—what does he mean by this? Salvation? The ability and opportunity to be Jesus’ rep, ambassador?
Which is in you through the laying on of hands?? Read the last verse again
For God gave us a spirit, not of fear or cowardice, but of power and love and self-control,
Laying on of hands—the, at times, transfer or transmission of the Holy Spirit to a new believer with seen manifestations, tongues, flames of fire, miracles, etc.
So what is Timothy to be fanning into flame? The power, love and self-control of the Spirit that lives within him.
What causes the fire of the Spirit within us to become a small little flame?
What is our struggle?
What do we fear?
Well let’s look at Timothy’s apparent struggle?
2 Timothy 1:8–14 ESV
Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, for which I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher, which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me. Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.
Therefore
Do not be ashamed, how? By the power of the Holy Spirit
Share in suffering, how? By the power of the Holy Spirit
Paul reminds Timothy of what? His salvation and His calling, a holy calling
Holy—set apart for a purpose, for God’s purposes, sacred, sanctuary, sanctify
By the way, He saved us and called us not because of anything we had done, but because of His own purposes and grace, free gift and empowerment, which He gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, God’s plan from the beginning for Jesus to come and do
Jesus conquered what and gave what? Death and life and immortality through the gospel. Life is one thing, immortality is another, explain??
So the conscious awareness of this has done what to Paul?
Preacher—proclaimer of the Word
apostle—see above
teacher—not as in knowledge, but as in life change, apprenticeship,
Which is why he suffers—a life lived for Jesus and His kingdom in a world that is opposed to Jesus and has a counterfeit kingdom will bring suffering.
But Paul is not ashamed, why or how? Because he knows...
Knowoida, perfect and active tense, to know experientially not just mentally.
He knows whom—not information but a person and who He is and what He has done, not only for others but for him.
He is also convinced—no wavering, no doubt, doesn’t mean he won’t at times be confused, question God and His ways, but never doubt who Jesus is and what He’s done.
How? Because it is actually God who is guarding Paul’s faith, the gospel, his apostleship
Entrusted—something of value to someone worthy to possess it, made worthy by His choosing
Follow the pattern of sound words, Pauls teaching, in faith, in love, in Christ Jesus, by the Holy Spirit, guard… continuously guard
Stay alert, diligent, on guard
What is Paul asking of Timothy? Unashamed service, suffering, faithful handling and proclamation of the gospel
Paul modeled it for Timothy, now as an apprentice, it’s Timothy’s turn to be the “master” in the power of the Holy Spirit, not his own.
