THE NEW HEAVEN AND EARTH
Revelation 22:1–21

I. WONDER—vv. 1–5

Note the wonders of this new home for God’s people:

A. The river of life—v. 1. (See Ezekiel 47:12.)

B. The tree of life—v. 2. (See Revelation 2:7.)

C. The curse removed—v. 3a. This is the curse from Genesis 3:1–15.

D. The throne of God—v. 2b. God’s servants shall serve God and the Lamb.

E. His name on people’s foreheads—v. 4

F. No night—v. 5a. God will give light. (See 1 John 1:5.)

G. God’s people reign forever—v. 5b

II. WORSHIP—vv. 6–9

A. Angel—v. 6. An angel showed John the things that would soon come to pass.

B. Attention—v. 7. Christ’s coming will be soon. Blessed are those, who keep His testimonies. Blessed are those who are ready.

C. Affection—vv. 8–9. John bowed before the angel in respect and honor, but the angel warned John not to bow since he was a fellow servant.

III. WARNING—vv. 10–16

A. Sacred—v. 10. Daniel was told to shut up his book (Dan. 12:9). But John was now told to keep the book open.

B. Sin—v. 11. The fulfillment of the revelation is so soon to come that men will have little time to repent. The saints are to be faithful until the end. (See Galatians 6:7–8.)

C. Savior—vv. 12–13. Christ will reward men according to their works. Christ is the first and the last—the Alpha and Omega.

D. Salvation—v. 14. Those who follow Christ will be able to enter the new Jerusalem.

E. Sin—v. 15. Sin will remain outside this city for the inside will be holy.

F. Star—v. 16. Christ is the bright and morning star (cf. Rev. 2:28).

IV. WHOSOEVER—vv. 17–19

A. Water—v. 17. This is the last invitation for salvation in the Bible. Whosoever is thirsty may drink of the water of life and be satisfied. Note that this water is free for all people. (See John 1:12; 3:16.)

B. Warning—vv. 18–19. A two-fold warning:

1. Anyone that adds to God’s Word will receive the plagues of this book. Some people add things to try to prove their doctrine.

2. Anyone that takes away from God’s Word will not have his name in the book of life and will not see the holy city. Accept His Word as it is.

C. Wonder—vv. 20–21. Christ will come quickly. His coming will be a great wonder. The benediction is found in verse 21.
