John’s Purpose
John’s Purpose
To begin, it is good for us to understand what exactly was the purpose of John’s ministry.
First, We are told of the kind of work he was engaging in: preaching and baptism.
Preaching
Repentance.
The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.
Baptism
The significance of this Baptism
Confessing their sins
Second, Scriptural meaning behind this ministry. If there is no biblical mandate and foundation for this ministry, it cannot be said to be legitimate.
Isaiah’s Testimoney (Isaiah 40:1-11).
Isaiah 40 comes right after the announcement that Israel would be carried away into Babylon at a future time. Hezekiah’s lack of vision causes him to be indifferent about the future of his Kingdom and God’s people. The readers, however, are left devestated with the result. The fact that the sons of the king will become eunuchs in babylon signifies the end of the Kingly line. Will God’s people be forever abandoned? This is where the important role of the Voice comes in.
The Voice is a prophet whose coming signal God’s coming to his people, and prepares people for God’s king, as well as God himself. He is commanded to comfort the people of God by announcing that they will get the opposite of what their sins deserve: grace.
The picture of wilderness harkens back to the
briars and thorns that Israel’s inheritance has become, which will also be visible in John’s lifestyle.
Annoincing three things (three voices). The Voice is a piercing hope for a people that have been left in a spiritual wilderness of their own making.
Make a path in the wilderness for the coming glory of the Lord. (1-5)
What should the voice cry, since all words and promises of men are temorary and worthless? The Word of our God. (6-8)
The Voice calls to the cities of Judah to fear not, because God comes with power (his arm) to reward and recompense and to tend his flock compassionately. (9-11)
Finally, lets look at John’s lifestyle and way of carrying out the ministry he has been given.
