John 5:1–15 (NASB95)
1 After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porticoes.
3 In these lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, and withered, [waiting for the moving of the waters;
4 for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was made well from whatever disease with which he was afflicted.]
5 A man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years.
6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been a long time in that condition, He said to him, “Do you wish to get well?”
7 The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me.”
8 Jesus said to him, “Get up, pick up your pallet and walk.”
9 Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk.
Now it was the Sabbath on that day.
10 So the Jews were saying to the man who was cured, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not permissible for you to carry your pallet.”
11 But he answered them, “He who made me well was the one who said to me, ‘Pick up your pallet and walk.’ ”
12 They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Pick up your pallet and walk’?”
13 But the man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away while there was a crowd in that place.
14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have become well; do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse happens to you.”
15 The man went away, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.

· 95-100 AD – the Bible was completed
· 1200 AD – Chapters were added to the Greek Text.
· 1550 AD – verses were added to the Greek Text.
The Greek text of the Bible was translated from 6 different manuscripts (the oldest of them dating back to 100 AD
A little later:
There were 6,000 manuscripts found, these were the earliest and best manuscripts that date back to the 2-3 century
- One manuscript of the Gospel of John was found and dated within 35 years after the events in John.
The earliest manuscript don’t have 3b and 4 on the text.
Thus why it is not in some Bibles

So Why?

In other words John 5:3b- 4 were added as a side note, not as scripture. So that People could understand the text of SCRIPTURE.
But what about the angel of the Lord?
Glen Ivy?

back with John

John 5:5–9 NASB95
5 A man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been a long time in that condition, He said to him, “Do you wish to get well?” 7 The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” 8 Jesus said to him, “Get up, pick up your pallet and walk.” 9 Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk. Now it was the Sabbath on that day.
v.5-6 - the man has been ill and in that current state for 38 years. This made was ill long before Jesus became flesh.

Do you want to get well?

unlike the last chapter when the royal official came/ searched out Jesus for healing.
Jesus comes to this man, seeing that he is ill and ask him if he wanted to be made well.

The man’s response

v.7
notice here that the man does not answer Jesus question, but he talks about his disability.
Jesus asks him a question, and all he can see if his what he doesn't have.
This man was an outcast. And has been this way for 38 years. The Jewish elite believed that illnesses could be because of sin. ( John 9:2)
no one cared about him, Jesus did
v.8-9
Just as the man ignores Jesus’ question.
Jesus at the same time ignores the man’s inability
the man became Well, instantly.
Jesus asked him if he wanted to be made well, and made him well.
Jesus did this on the Sabbath
John 5:10–13 NAS
So the Jews were saying to the man who was cured, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not permissible for you to carry your pallet.” But he answered them, “He who made me well was the one who said to me, ‘Pick up your pallet and walk.’ ” They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Pick up your pallet and walk’?” But the man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away while there was a crowd in that place.
We know that the Jews held the sabbath as a time of no work.
Jesus told this month pick up his pallet and walk, on the sabbath.
This man was known. He had been sick for 38 years. but now this man is walking, holding his pallet.
but the Jewish elite did not care about that.
This man is walking, was ill, and unable for 38 years, but know he is.
The Jews did not see his healing but his breaking the sabbath rules.
“holy rules”
do we see this in our churches?
John 5:14–15 NASB95
14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have become well; do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse happens to you.” 15 The man went away, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
Jesus warns this man, after finding him, to stop sinning, or something worse will happen to Him
Sin is not always the reason for sicknesses, but it can be.
Jesus tells him, now that he is well to stop a life of sin, or something worse then 38 years of being lame with become worse for him.
Jesus makes it clear. there is a standard to be with Him, God does not just do things without instruction. GOD IS NOT A GENE
John 5:16 NASB95
16 For this reason the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath.
Not the attention turns to Jesus.
Notice the man: the text never says that he believed, or trusted into God.
The man is more concerned with the Jewish elite and not God,
