New Hope Men's Breakfast

Introduction

Good morning men. Thank you Pastor Andrew for asking me to come and speak with you this morning and providing an amazing breakfast.

Thank you to those that prepared it.

This morning I’d like to direct your attention to two passages of scripture that your most likely familiar with.

Matthew 28:19–20 KJV 1900

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

and

1 Corinthians 16:13 KJV 1900

13 Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.

The first passage is from Jesus and he is telling his disciples what to do while He is away and the second is from the Apostle Paul writing to the problem child church of Corinth telling the men there to Act like men.

I don’t know if you’ve ever connected those passages before but they are of utmost importance for men to lead lives fully dedicated to the Lord.

The principle I’d like to draw out of both of these this morning is discipleship. Acting like a Christian man means being a disciple. I’d like to go a step further and say it means being a disciple on purpose.

Men get a bad wrap for doing things alone and not following instructions. Being a disciple requires being discipled and discipling. which includes being together and reading the instructions God has given us.

The truth is I think we absolutely enjoy doing things together. Working on this beautiful building, working out together, watching sports, and other hobbies or projects are some things we like to do together.

I’d even go as far to say that many enjoy their time in God’s Word. We will read a devotion on the Bible app, grab a chapter from proverbs, or rehearse our favorite verses

Ephesians 5:22–23 KJV 1900

22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

Those things are great…maybe not the last one…but there is a problem.

That type of human interaction and bible interaction results in a surface level relationship with both.

My challenge to you this morning is to see that Acting like men is being a disciple and being discipled.

Speaking sterotypically I believe I can say men are intentional with their lives and actions....or at least we like to be.

We don’t go shopping around....we go get what we want and walk out....unless it’s cabellas or bass pro.

however we do shop around with our weeks when we are not intenional about investing time the relationships God has given us with other men so that we may be as iron sharpening iron and edifying those around us.

Paul wrote to the problem church at corinth and told their men to act like men. Jesus said to His disciples…go and tell others about me, baptize them, and then teach them.

As I close in prayer would you ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you two things this morning?

What man can I reach out to this week and be an encouragement to?

What man can I ask to help me in my walk with the Lord?
