SERMON NOTES
Subject: “Effective Prayer”
Speaker: Dr.
A. Burge Troxel
Date: March 11, 2007
Scripture: Daniel 9:1-29
*Introduction:*
We need to pray more effectively.
– James 5:16b
James 5:16b
“. . .
The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.”
Let’s follow Daniel’s example because his prayer was answered in an awesome manner.
Daniel 9:21-23
Daniel 9:21
“while I was still in prayer, Gabriel, the man I had seen in the earlier vision, came to me in swift flight about the time of the evening sacrifice.”
Daniel 9:23
“As soon as you began to pray, an answer was given, which I have come to tell you, for you are highly esteemed.
Therefore, consider the message and understand the vision:”
*Daniel’s Prayer incorporated 7 great Principles*
*1.
Connect your prayer to God’s Plan.
Daniel 9:1-3*
Daniel 9:2
“in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the Scriptures, according to the word of the Lord given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years.”
Jeremiah 29:10
This is what the Lord says: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my gracious promise to bring you back to this place.”
1 John 5:14-15
14This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
15And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.
*2.
Identify with those who have Sinned.
Daniel 9:4-6*
Daniel 9:4-5
4I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed: “O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with all who love him and obey his commands, 5we have sinned and done wrong.
We have been wicked and have rebelled; we have turned away from your commands and laws.
1 John 1:8
“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.”
1 John 1:9
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
Romans 3:10
As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one;
*3.
Lift up God’s Character.
Daniel 9:7-11a*
Daniel 9:7a, 9a
7“Lord, you are righteous, . .
.”
\\ 9“The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, . .
.”
1 John 1:5
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.
*4.
Recognize God’s Correction.
Daniel 9:11b-14*
Daniel 9:11b
“ . . .
Therefore the curses and sworn judgments written in the Law of Moses, the servant of God, have been poured out on us, because we have sinned against you.”
Hebrews 12:6
“ . .
.because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son.”
*5.
Recall God’s Faithfulness.
Daniel 9:15-16*
Daniel 9:15
“Now, O Lord our God, who brought your people out of Egypt with a mighty hand . .
.”
Ephesians 1:3
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.”
*6.
Ask for God’s Mercy.
Daniel 9:17-18*
Daniel 9:18b
“ . . .
We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy.”
1 Peter 1:3
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!
In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,”
*7.
Appeal to God’s Reputation.
Daniel 9:19*
Daniel 9:19
“O Lord, listen!
O Lord, forgive!
O Lord, hear and act!
For your sake, O my God, do not delay, because your city and your people bear your Name.”
Exodus 32:12
“Why should the Egyptians say, ‘It was with evil intent that he brought them out, to kill them in the mountains and to wipe them off the face of the earth’?
Turn from your fierce anger; relent and do not bring disaster on your people.”
*Conclusion:*
Compose a prayer like Daniel’s and you will experience results.
