John 6:22-59
(vv. 22-26) The crowd is seeking after Jesus
They follow after Him after He goes to the other side of the lake
They get into boats and search for him on the other side of the lake
They find him in Capernaum in the Synagogue (v. 59)
Jesus says that they are only following Him because they had their fill of bread
He wants them to know that He is not their personal chefs
We have already said that many people come to Jesus for self reasons
But maybe believers also approach Jesus in prayer much the same way
We look to Jesus to give us what we want, and we become upset if He doesn’t give it as we ask
He is not your genie, He is your Savior who always does what is best for His people
(vv. 27-28) Do not work for the food that perishes
What is the food that perishes?
Moralistic strivings
Verse 28- What must we do?
Could it be that the way that we often teach in church feeds this problem?
This is a sure way to waste your life
So what do we work for?
Look away from your work to God who is the One who has worked for you
(29-59) Be sustained and satisfied
Whoever eats His flesh and drinks His blood
He is life-giving food
He is food and drink through His work on the cross
Harkens to the Lord’s Supper
Luke 22:19-20- And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.
Whoever believes in Him will have eternal life
He will give life to every single person who believes in Him
Those who aren’t concerned about what they can get from Him, but rather just want Him
Come and eat without price
Isaiah 55:1- “Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
Whoever comes to Him will never hunger or thirst
He satisfies the soul
Not only in heaven, but also now
Psalm 90:14- Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
Psalm 16:11- In your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Romans 15:13-
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life
This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
whoever comes to me I will never cast out.
everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him
Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me
whoever believes has eternal life
If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever
unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you
Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day
Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him
whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me
Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever
