Psalm 77 – A Cry Unto God
1 I cried unto God with my voice, even unto God with my voice; and he gave ear unto me.
· Meaning he cried aloud, or out loud with an audible voice.
2 In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my sore ran in the night, and ceased not: my soul refused to be comforted.
· What better time to seek God than when you are in the midst of trouble? How about before you get into trouble?
· Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Matthew 7:7-8. Promise of God!
3 I remembered God, and was troubled: I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed. Selah.
· Jesus instructed us to remember Him.
· We’re instructed to teach our children.
4 Thou holdest mine eyes waking: I am so troubled that I cannot speak.
5 I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times.
The Psalmist begins to focus on himself, his situation, his condition, his… rather than on God. He is trying to understand his suffering. The Bible says the just shall live by faith.
6 I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search.
· This getting into the mind, body, soul, and spirit seeking and searching.
7 Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more?
· These seem to be a series of rhetorical questions, but they could just as well be brought on by fear and doubt.
8 Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore?
· We know His promises are yea and amen – 2 Corinthians 1:20 For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.
9 Hath God forgotten to be gracious? hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies? Selah.
· Selah, think on these things – what if HE has – But He wouldn’t
10 And I said, This is my infirmity: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High.
· You may recall the words of Jonah, “When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.” Jonah 2:7. It’s not an uncommon thing for us to run to God when we are faint hearted.
11 I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.
· Exodus 15:11 Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?
· What is it that you remember about the Lord and how He has delivered you?
· Isaiah 26:3 Thou will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
12 I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.
13 Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God?
· Isaiah 44:6 Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.
· Isaiah 45:5 I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:
14 Thou art the God that doest wonders: thou hast declared thy strength among the people.
· Can I just declare right here, God is still in the wonder business.
15 Thou hast with thine arm redeemed thy people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.
16 The waters saw thee, O God, the waters saw thee; they were afraid: the depths also were troubled.
17 The clouds poured out water: the skies sent out a sound: thine arrows also went abroad.
18 The voice of thy thunder was in the heaven: the lightnings lightened the world: the earth trembled and shook.
19 Thy way is in the sea, and thy path in the great waters, and thy footsteps are not known.
20 Thou leddest thy people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
· Today, because of the work on the cross by Jesus Christ, we are now led by the Spirit.
