Intro: LOTR on suffering
“We’re going on a bit too fast. You and I, Sam, are still stuck in the worst places of the story, and it is all too likely that some will say at this point ‘Shut the book now, dad; we don’t want to read any more’.”
We don’t like suffering

Don’t be surprised (12)

It’s kind of an expectation that you’re going to suffer if you’re a Christian
Matthew 5:10–11 NASB95
“Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.
The world hated Jesus, it’s not like it’s going to be loving to His people
We preach and live out a message that is offensive to the world
Give yourself up, you aren’t perfect, you are sinful, etc.
That doesn’t mean that you need to suffer for legitimate reasons (15)
We are supposed to be a people that love people well and in such a way that is different from everyone else.
We’re not supposed to break laws or be a jerk just to suffer.

Our hope in the midst of suffering

When we suffer, it’s easy to get sad and feel like God’s abandoned you, but that’s not the case!
When we suffer, we share in the sufferings of Christ (13) and that allows us to glorify God all the more
Our suffering also allows us to evangelize to others through our suffering
If we don’t, what’s going to happen to our friends (18)
Lastly, we realize that our suffering isn’t permanent, and that when we suffer we can put our trust in God, who was willing to suffer so much more for us.
Hebrews 12:2 NASB95
fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Jesus suffered because He knew what His reward was, which is being with us.
Questions.
How can suffering allow you to glorify God more?
Do you think that you suffer for being a Christian? How?
How do you think that you can tell other people about Jesus through your suffering?
