How can we bear the fruit of the Spirit? (Gal 5:16-26)

- (1) There is no different gospel! Only Faith! Through faith in Jesus, our sins are forgiven and we can be saved.

- (2) Now it is no longer I who lives, but Jesus who lives in me! Jesus is the Lord of my life.

- (3) By faith, we can enjoy the blessings of Abraham.

- (4) By faith, we became God’s beloved children.

- These are messages about what blessings we receive and what changes to us when we believe in Jesus.

- But today’s message is about a life after faith in Jesus, about how to live as Christians.

- Today’s text says that there is a spiritual 줄다리기 (tug of war) in our hearts after believing in Jesus.

- 육체의 정욕 VS 성령 The desires of the flesh VS the Holy Spirit

2. The Works of the Flesh and the Fruit of the Spirit

1) 내 마음 안에서의 두가지 마음

- “육체"의 의미: 몸의 살을 말하는 것 아니다! 우리 안에 있는 sinful nature, bad mind and thought

- 두 가지 마음: the desire of the flesh & the desire of the Spirit

- 이 두가지 마음이 계속 싸운다!

- The desires of the flesh lead us to do the works of the flesh. The Holy Spirit leads us to bear the fruit of the Spirit.

2) 육체의 일들

Galatians 5:19–21 NIV

The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

- (a) sexual sins

- (b) spiritual sins of serving other fake gods

- (c) sins about relationship with others

- (d) laziness

- These are representative phenomena appearing when the evil desires of the flesh reign over us.

>> Think about which ones apply to you among these!

- 하나님의 나라를 받지 못한다? What does it mean?

- (1) 구원을 못 받는다! (2) 천국에는 가는데 상을 많이 못 받는다! (3) 이 땅에서 하나님의 나라를 온전히 누리지 못한다! (4) 이 말은 그냥 원칙적인 말이다.

- 어렵다. 어떻게 보면 다 맞다!

1 Corinthians 6:9–11 NIV

Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

- Salvation is given through faith! By the way, if one live bearing the fruit of the flesh, they cannot enjoy or experience the kingdom of God in their lives.

- And, strictly speaking, it is not general for God’s saved people to continuously live like this.

3) 성령의 열매

- Today’s text also introduces the fruit of the Holy Spirit!

- It’s very important! These fruits should appear in our lives. These are the standard for evaluating our spiritual maturity. When we meet Jesus in the future, Jesus will ask us this, “How much did you produce the fruit of the Spirit?”

- There are 9 kinds of fruit.

Galatians 5:22–23 NIV

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

>> We must bear these fruits in our daily lives.

- Are you bearing this fruit every day? Do those around you see this fruit through your words and behaviors?

4) 영적인 싸움 Spiritual Warfare

- Actually, both the works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit appear in our lives because there are both the two kinds in us.

- The desires of the flesh and the desires of the Holy Spirit

- These two are always in conflict with one another in us. It’s a spiritual warfare. It’s like 줄다리기 (tug of war).

>> We must win this tug of war and bear the fruit of the Spirit in our lives.

- Jesus will ask us this and evaluate our lives with this!

~ By the way, there is a secret to win this spiritual warfare in our lives.

3. 비결: 성령을 따라 행하라!

1) 오징어게임에서 줄다리에게서 이기는 비결 <PPT>

- What was the secret to win 줄다리기 in squid game?

- “누워서 버티기" To lie and endure!

- 3발짝 앞으로! 그리고 한번에 당기기 / three steps forward! and suddenly pull!

2) The secret: “Walk by the Spirit!”

So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

- The secret is simple. Walk by the Spirit!

- You don’t have to strugle to fight with the desires of the flesh. If you walk by the Spirit, you can overcome the temptations naturally and bear the fruit of the Spirit.

Galatians 5:18 NIV

But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

- Paul repeats the same words. If you are led by the Spirit, you can bear the fruit of the Spirit.

- This concerns “the direction and empowerment of the Holy Spirit.” <PPT>

!! The Holy Spirit is the one who directs and empowers us in our lives.

>> Through today’s text, God is speaking to us that, if we walk by the Spirit who guides and empowers us, we can win our spiritual warfare and bear the fruit of the Spirit.

2) 빛과 어둠과도 같다.

- The relationship between the Holy Spirit and the desires of the flesh in us is like light and darkness.

- Can light and darkness go together? No!

- Like this, the Holy Spirit and evil desires cannot go together.

- And we know that light always win over darkness.

- In a pitch dark room, if just a little light come into the room, darkness disappears automatically. Likewise, darkness cannot defeat light.

- The same is true for the Holy Spirit and the desires of the flesh.

- Our sinful nature cannot win over the Holy Spirit.

- When we rely on the Spirit in us and walk with Him, we can win the spiritual warfare with the power of the Holy Spirit.

3) 적용

- So, the secret is simple.

>> In your daily life, follow the Holy Spirit! Be led by the Spirit!

>> Whenever you need His help and guidance, whenever you face some temptations, whenever you cannot bear the fruit of the Spirit on your own, pray to the Holy Spirit in you to guide you, to empower you. “성령님, 인도해주세요" “성령님, 힘을 주세요" “성령님, 도와 주세요"

- Whenever you need! As often as possible.

4. 성령의 열매, 성령님이 맺으신다.

1) 성령님이 맺으시는 열매

- Love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control

- These are the fruits of the Holy Spirit.

!! This means that it’s the Holy Spirit who produces these fruits.

- These are not what we can produce on our own.

>> If we just acknowledge the presence of the Holy Spirit and are led by Him every moment, the Spirit bears the fruit in us.

2) Keep in step with the Spirit!

Galatians 5:25 NIV

Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

- What does this verse mean?

- In today’s text, expressions with the concept of walking by the Spirit repeats four times.

- in verses 16, 18, 25

- 다 같은 말! 그런데 마지막에 있는 이 단어는 좀 다르다.

- “keep in step with” (“스토이케오”): “발걸음을 맞추다” “walk in line behind a leader"

- EX: 한 명 불러내서 같이 발 맞춰서 걸어가기

>> 우리 삶 속에서 정말 매순간 한걸음 한걸음 성령님과 함께 걸어가자! 한 걸음 뒤에서 성령님의 인도를 받으면서!

>> Let’s walk with the Holy Spirit step by step every moment in our lives! Being led by Him just one step behind Him!

>> 크고 작은 선택을 할 때마다, 성령님과 함께 결정하라! 인도해 달라고 기도하라! “성령님, 인도해 주세요! 지혜를 주세요"

>> Whenever you make big and small decisions, make a decision with the Holy Spirit! Pray to guide you! “Holy Spirit! guide me! give me your wisdom.”

>> 힘들고 어려운 일이 있을 때마다, 성령님과 동행하라! 기도하라 “성령님! 나에게 힘을 주세요!”

>> Whenever you face hardships and difficulties, walk with the Spirit! Pray to Him! “Holy Spirit! give me power to overcome this!”

>> 죄이 유혹이 있을 때마다, 내 안의 죄성이 꿈틀거릴 때마다, 오늘 말씀을 기억하라! Walk by the Spirit! Be led by the Spirit! Keep in step with the Spirit!

>> Whenever you face temptations of sin, whenever evil desires in you wriggle, remember today’s message! Walk by the Spirit! Be led by the Spirit! Keep in step with the Spirit!

!! 그렇게 성령님을 따라 한걸음 한걸음 걸어가다 보면, 그 성령님이 여러분의 삶 속에서 성령의 열매를 맺으실 것이다!

!! As you walk by the Spirit like this, step by step, the Holy Spirit will bear the fruit of the Spirit in your lives!
