Colossians 1:12-13 Giving thanks to the Father
I just want to give thanks and praise to God the Father for commanding his love to me in his only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. I want everyone to know how truly good the Father is who spared not his only Son. I want everyone to praise this awesome God of whom is the only true God!
12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: 13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
· It is the Father who sent the son
· We are indebted to the Father
· He is the one who loves us
· The Father is the initiator of salvation
· The Father is the initiator of sanctification
Blessings of the Father
· God the Father has made us meet to be partakers (v.2)
o Word for meet in Greek only used 2 times in scripture
o The true believer is fit for heaven – right now!
· Greek word for “meet” = suitable or sufficient
How are we made meet? (v.12)
We are children of God and therefore inheritors - 1 John 3:1 - Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
· We are inheritors through Jesus Christ. (Romans 8:17)
· The Father has declared us sons of God.
· Sons are heirs of their Father
The Father is the rewarder of those who seek him.
· Hebrews 11:6 - “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”
· Matthew 6:6 - But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
It is the Father who gives us to Jesus and hold us fast.
· John 17:24 - Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
· John 10:28-30 - And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. I and my Father are one.
· James 1:17 - Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
The Father is who sent Jesus to pay for our sin.
· Romans 8:32 - He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
· Mark 14:36 - And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.
· John 7:16 - Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.
It is the Father who forgives sins
· Mark 11:23 - And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
It is the Father who sanctifies us through Christ
· Jude 1.1 - Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called:
o Sanctified by the Father
o Preserved in the blood of Jesus Christ
o Called by the Spirit by the Father
· Jesus prayed “Sanctify then in through thy truth, thy Word is truth.” – John 17:17
It is the Father who send the Holy Spirit to indwell us.
· John 14:16 - And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.
· John 14:26 - But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
· Acts 2:33 - Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
How do we give thanks to the Father?
· John 15:8 - Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
· Colossians 3:17 - And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
· Psalms 107:1 - O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
· Hebrews 13:15 - By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.
· Ephesians 5:20 - Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
Conclusion
We are to receive he whom the Father sent
· John 13:20 - Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
