John 12:12–19 (ESV)
12 The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.
13 So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!”
14 And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,
15 “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!”
16 His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him.
17 The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness.
18 The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign.
19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.”
Once again we have a New Testament parallel pointing to Jesus from the 118th Psalm.
Other writers in the New Testament Scriptures have mentioned Psalm 118:22 - “the stone which the builders have rejected...”
John, by inspiration of the Holy Spirit reminds us that the crowds cry out in parallel to Psalm 118:25-26
Psalm 118:25–26 ESV
25 Save us, we pray, O Lord! O Lord, we pray, give us success! 26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! We bless you from the house of the Lord.
Yet, this Messiah, now fully revealed in His first advent comes as a humble servant riding on a donkey’s colt instead of as the triumphant King riding on a white horse as we see in Revelation chapter 19.
Some see that He is serving sinful mankind, but the story of John is that He is the obedient servant of the Eternal Father.
Further, John Records that in doing this contrite mode of entry into the Holy city, He was the fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9
Zechariah 9:9 ESV
9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Look at the DISCIPLES: “His Disciples did not understand these things at first, BUT when Jesus was Glorified, THEN they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done TO Him.

Look at the CROWD: “Because He had done this sign...”

Look at the PHARISEES: “This is going nowhere, the WORLD has gone after Him!”

The disciples missed the obvious, that Jesus must fulfill the parallels of Scripture.
The crowd missed the Messiah because they could only focus on the wonder of the miracle instead of the Miracle Worker...
The Pharisees rejected His authority, His position and His message because He threatened their position of power and control.
Do you not see, O reader, that God has obscured the Christ so that He may go ALONE to the cross to become a sin offering for us?
Yet, of those whom the Father had given - the apostles, none save Judas would ultimately forsake. They were blind in the moment, but soon they would see with perfect clarity...
