I. Jesus Curses the Fig Tree vs. 11-14
I. Jesus Curses the Fig Tree vs. 11-14
A. Jesus looks around at all the activity, and takes it in before going back to Bethany.
B. The fig season isn’t for another 5 weeks, but it was full of leaves. Jesus didn’t curse it like some spoiled child, but in order to show us a picture of religion.
C. Israel and the church are incredibly similar. The fig tree was used several times to show Israel their true selves. Jer. 8:13
“I will surely snatch them away,” declares the Lord;
“There will be no grapes on the vine
And no figs on the fig tree,
And the leaf will wither;
And what I have given them will pass away.” ’ ”
Woe is me! For I am
Like the fruit pickers, like the grape gatherers.
There is not a cluster of grapes to eat,
Or a first-ripe fig which I crave.
The godly person has perished from the land,
And there is no upright person among men.
All of them lie in wait for bloodshed;
Each of them hunts the other with a net.
Concerning evil, both hands do it well.
The prince asks, also the judge, for a bribe,
And a great man speaks the desire of his soul;
So they weave it together.
The best of them is like a briar,
The most upright like a thorn hedge.
The day when you post your watchmen,
Your punishment will come.
Then their confusion will occur.
Do not trust in a neighbor;
Do not have confidence in a friend.
From her who lies in your bosom
Guard your lips.
For son treats father contemptuously,
Daughter rises up against her mother,
Daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
A man’s enemies are the men of his own household.
II. Jesus Cleanses the Temple vs. 15-19
II. Jesus Cleanses the Temple vs. 15-19
A. Jesus clears and cleanses the temple of the money changers. They were telling people that their Roman (or any other) currencies were secular, so they had to pay an exorbitant exchange rate.
B. They were selling sacrificial animals and merchandise for a high price as well. (Lifeway ex)
C. Jesus cleanses the temple and tells them its a house of prayer for all nations quoting Isaiah. This slaps the prejudice, corrupt religious leaders in the face.
D. They had to get rid of Jesus, and would succeed by week’s end. The way people get rid of Jesus today is to make Him soft with no judgment, or all judgment with no love.
E. Many saw the truth in what was said and going on.
F. Jesus did this 3 years prior, yet it had to be done again. We get revived it only last, but for so long if we’re not careful to stay focused on Jesus.
III. Jesus calls to Faith-Filled Prayer vs. 20-26
III. Jesus calls to Faith-Filled Prayer vs. 20-26
A. The fig tree, much like Israel, and sadly the church was withered dead on the inside, looks alive (or rich) on the outside.
B. Jesus tells His disciples and us, that we need to have faith. Only faith will make the withered alive. Only God can do that, only God can produce the fruit of the Spirit.
C. If we pray without doubting God will move mountains! But we must believe God to do it.
D. In order to do it, we must forgive, if not God will wither you, and you will be useless on a shelf. That will be a miserable life.
