Text - Luke 20.1-2
Luke 20:1–2 NKJV
1 Now it happened on one of those days, as He taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel, that the chief priests and the scribes, together with the elders, confronted Him 2 and spoke to Him, saying, “Tell us, by what authority are You doing these things? Or who is he who gave You this authority?”
Title - The Question Of Authority

Background

what is authority?
how does one get authority?
do we have authority as children of God?
how can we properly use this authority?

Things to know about authority

all authority is delegated or vested
all authority have jurisdiction
all authority ultimately comes from God
all human actions are “authorized” actions, either -
by God
by man or the devil
or a usurpation of authority

Delegated authority

The Jewish leaders wanted to know who gave authority to Jesus
their authorities go back as far as the time of Moses, Aaron, the patriarchs, etc.
Saul was given authority to imprison the followers of Jesus
Acts 9:13–14 NKJV
13 Then Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem. 14 And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on Your name.”
Human governments received their authority from God
Romans 13:1 NKJV
1 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.
Jesus’ authority was delegated to Him by the Father
John 5:26–27 NKJV
26 For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, 27 and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man.
John 14:10 NKJV
10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.

Limits of Authority

Angels have power over certain things
Revelation 14:18 NKJV
18 And another angel came out from the altar, who had power over fire, and he cried with a loud cry to him who had the sharp sickle, saying, “Thrust in your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth, for her grapes are fully ripe.”
Disciples were given power over unclean spirits
Matthew 10:1 NKJV
1 And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.
The 2 witness will have power to show signs and wonders
Revelation 11:6 NKJV
6 These have power to shut heaven, so that no rain falls in the days of their prophecy; and they have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to strike the earth with all plagues, as often as they desire.
The Beast was granted power
Revelation 13:5–7 NKJV
5 And he was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, and he was given authority to continue for forty-two months. 6 Then he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, His tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven. 7 It was granted to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them. And authority was given him over every tribe, tongue, and nation.
Pontius Pilate has limited power
John 19:10–11 NKJV
10 Then Pilate said to Him, “Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have power to crucify You, and power to release You?” 11 Jesus answered, “You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.”

Authorized actions

All human actions are “authorized” by someone else.

human basic rights they are God-given rights (authority)
to eat, to have shelter, to express one’s opinion
special rights - are given by authorities, etc
to live in a country, in a house etc
to do business, etc
to enter any facility - house, building, mall
driving a car, parking a car, etc.
building a structure
family rights
basic - eat food, use facilities, etc
special - leave the house; go with friends; watch certain movies; bring in friends

WHAT’S THE POINT?

As Christians, our actions should be sanctioned by God!
Christian life and ministry must properly authorized!
we have basic rights and special rights
John 1:12–13 NKJV
12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
Matthew 28:18–20 NKJV
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
Luke 10:19 NKJV
19 Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
Acts 4:5–10 NKJV
5 And it came to pass, on the next day, that their rulers, elders, and scribes, 6 as well as Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the family of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem. 7 And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, “By what power or by what name have you done this?” 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders of Israel: 9 If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well, 10 let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole.

Usurpation of authority

Usurpation of authority means the illegal use of authority and power, especially when it was not given to you.
A woman teaching and leading men in the church
1 Timothy 2:12–14 NKJV
12 And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.
Murder - killing another person is murder, except when it was authorized by God
Genesis 9:5–6 NKJV
5 Surely for your lifeblood I will demand a reckoning; from the hand of every beast I will require it, and from the hand of man. From the hand of every man’s brother I will require the life of man. 6 “Whoever sheds man’s blood, By man his blood shall be shed; For in the image of God He made man.
whoever kills another must also be killed because no one has the right to kill another human being
note - kill and murder is different
Exodus 20:13 NKJV
13 “You shall not murder.
To do any other work that is beyond one’s jurisdiction
King Saul - he offered sacrifice on the altar
non priests who handled the Ark because it was about to fall from the cart
To command demons when you are not authorized
Acts 19:11–16 NKJV
11 Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, 12 so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them. 13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.” 14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” 16 Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

WHAT’S THE POINT?

When we act, let us make sure our actions are backed up by the right authorities -
when you act as Christians in this world
when you cast out demons
when you pray over anything
when you do ministry
