Thanksgiving is a time to reflect upon how blessed we are in faith, family and friends.
We often sing the song “Count Your Blessings” as a reminder of how thankful we should be.
But if you really look at what you are singing that song tells us to count our blessings in the trials of life.
When up on life’s billows you are tempest tossed, when you are discouraged thinking all is lost, Count your many blessings, name them one by one, and it will surprise you what the Lord has done.
So amid the conflict, whether great or small, Do not be discouraged God is over all; Count you many blessings, angels will attend, help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.
Chorus; Count your blessings, name them one by one; Count your blessings see what God has done; Count your blessings, name them one by one; Count your many blessings see what God has done.
Thanksgiving in the good times is easy but to give thanks in our trials and tribulations shows the true character of a christian and that is what God desires from us.
Job was a man who had little reason to give thanks for all he was going through and because he didn’t understand why these things were happening to him.
Had Job known that God was using him as a weapon [test] to defeat Satan, he could have simply sat back and waited trustfully for the battle to end.
But God wanted Job to grow in his faith and be active in his faith as he does us when trials and tribulations come.
So as Job we must give thanksgiving in the bad as well as the good.
Text; Job 10 12
In the midst of trials and not so good encouragement from his friends Job made a statement of thanksgiving to God that we should all consider doing!
1.
You have Granted me Life:
Even though I have lost all my earthly goods, my family, and my wife wants me to curse You and die and I have no idea why these terrible things are happening to me, You created me and I’m still alive because of You!
Regardless of all my trials I still have a relationship/hope in the Creator of the heavens and the earth who has blessed and taken away
Though life is a struggle right now, God chose to have a relationship with me over everything else He created and give me life here abundantly and everlasting!
2.
You have Shown me Favor:
Favor is God’s grace that is not deserved but freely given.
How could Job give thanks for God’s favor in the midst of his world being turned upside down?
Job had salvation in God and that favor will triumph over all his hardships
Job knew Christ lived and had redeemed his soul and even if he died from all these issues he was going through, He would be with God
Job knew he had not deliberately sinned to bring these atrocities upon himself, but even if he had he would be judged by a just God
Aren’t you thankful today that you have the favor of God in the struggles of life!!
3.
Your Care has Preserved my Spirit:
Care- Loving kindness.
The provision of what is necessary for the health, welfare, maintenance, and protection of someone or something.
Preserve- to make safe, watch over, deliver to continue
Job is saying, “Regardless of what’s happening to me I know that you care for me because my spirit is confident in You.
Though I do not see You in my trials, nor do I understand them, I know You are here because it is against Your nature to forsake your own.”
We might not always understand the moment but we can always trust the Lord!
Close;
True Thanksgiving is an attitude of the heart and it only comes from one who trusts in God whether the times are good or bad.
In Psalm 136 there is a phrase that is used 26 times in 26 versus and that phrase is “For His mercy endures forever.”
Lam.
3:22-23 Through the Lord's mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not.
They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.
Because God is faithful and merciful to His children we always have reason in Everything to Give Thanks!
Amen!!
